Is a reptile at the top of your child’s Christmas list… but you have no idea what you’re signing up for? 🦎 🎄

You’re not alone. Choosing a family pet can feel like a big leap when your child is full of enthusiasm and you’re still wondering what it eats, how much space it needs, and who’ll be looking after it when the novelty wears off.

Our Reptile Readiness Guides are here to help you explore those questions together, before buying an animal or its enclosure.

They look honestly at the space, costs, feeding, daily care and adult responsibility involved, with an interactive Readiness Checker to help your family think it through.

We currently have guides for Royal Pythons, Leopard Geckos, Crested Geckos and Bearded Dragons.

Whether your answer is “yes”, “not yet” or “a different pet would suit us better”, understanding the commitment is a great place to start.

A little Sprout for your Friday evening 🌿

This is Sprout, our crested gecko. Those wonderful “eyelashes” are part of the crest that gives his species its name—and we think they deserve a close-up.

Meeting our animals gives you time to notice the little details: the patterns, the textures, the tiny toes. There’s plenty to discover whether you choose to handle an animal or simply watch.

Have you ever met Sprout on a Scaly Safari visit? 💚

The reality of reptile ownership… sometimes, they fancy a little nibble. 😂🐢

Toto had already turned down the food we offered him—but apparently Allen’s finger looked absolutely delicious.

Tortoises explore the world with their mouths, and fingers can occasionally be mistaken for something edible. No Allens were harmed in the making of this video… although his dignity may never recover.

Has your reptile ever mistaken something ridiculous for food?

Diolch yn fawr iawn to Ysgol Capel Garmon for sharing these brilliant photos! 🐍

This is exactly why we love visiting schools: seeing curriculum concepts become real as pupils meet, observe and learn from the animals themselves.

Our Classification & Adaptations workshop was created and is delivered by us (Scaly Safari founders Allen & Cerries), combining qualified classroom teaching with hands-on animal expertise. Designed with KS2 science links in mind, every session is adapted to the pupils, their ages and their individual needs.

A birthday party with a difference 🐍🦎

We had such a brilliant time celebrating Isaac’s birthday with him and his fellow reptile fans! Plenty of curious questions, gentle handling and some very memorable animal introductions.

Happy birthday, Isaac—thank you for inviting the Scaly Safari crew! 💚

“Mum… can I have a snake?” 🐍

A surprisingly small question with a surprisingly large number of follow-up questions. 😂

What does it eat? How big will it get? Who looks after it when we go away? Is it actually going to enjoy being handled? And — perhaps most importantly — who is really going to be responsible for it six months from now?

That’s exactly why we created our Reptile Decision Guides.

They’re not care sheets. They’re designed for families who are still at the “is this actually the right pet for us?” stage — with the honest stuff you need to know before an animal comes home.

We currently have guides for Royal Pythons, Bearded Dragons, Leopard Geckos, and Crested Geckos, with more on the way. 🦎

Because the best reptile purchase is the one you’re still happy with years later. 💚

A little more magic at ✨

On Thursday evening, we joined guests in Leeds for close encounters with some of the most extraordinary members of the Scaly Safari crew.

From Marmalade and Elphie to the smaller creatures waiting to be discovered, every interaction became part of the atmosphere—and gave guests a story, photograph or new perspective to take home.

Reptiles. Done differently.

Well…that was a little bit magical. ✨🐍

Last night, the Scaly Safari crew welcomed guests to a very special evening at The Hole In Wand Leeds.

Elphie took her role as leading lady completely in her stride. Thunder made wonderful friends with Matt Jameson, while Marmalade turned Gaynor Faye from slightly unsure into absolute adoration.

Hades remained mysteriously hidden in his beautifully webbed lair, leaving guests returning all evening to see whether he had appeared.

Thank you so much to Stuart, Emma, Cam and the whole team for trusting us to help create such a memorable welcome for your guests. We loved every minute.

This is what we mean by reptiles done differently.

Snakes can be soft.

Not in the way fur is soft. In the quietness of them. The unhurried movement. The unexpected gentleness of an animal so often cast as a monster.

Named for the Roman goddess of the moon, Luna looked almost otherworldly here—as though she has slipped from mythology rather than one of the stories that taught us snakes should be feared.

Across cultures and centuries, snakes have represented renewal, healing, wisdom and transformation.

Looking at this photograph, it’s easy to understand why.

Our beautiful Luna - captured by the talented Lauren Clitheroe, and deeply missed every day 🖤
