Leeds Children's Theatre

Leeds Children's Theatre Understood to be the longest established Children's Theatre group in the UK (having been formed in 1935) We were founded back in 1935.

A time before children's television, computers and other such technical innovations had been introduced to educate and entertain youngsters. Congratulations to all those successful in being cast in our November production of ‘Puppet’! The auditions were of an incredibly high standard and we had some very difficult decisions to make. More details about our wonderful cast will come out in due course.

But fear not… there is another opportunity to get involved for those who weren’t successful. This year, we are also putting on a Greenroom production of David Wood’s ‘The Owl & The Pussycat Went To See…’

📖 Readthrough - Monday 8th June 2026 - 6:30-8:30pm - Carriageworks Theatre
🎭 Auditions - Wednesday 10th June 2026 - 6:30-8:30pm - Carriageworks Theatre
🦉Show Dates - Friday 11th and Saturday 12th September 2026 - times vary - Studio @ The Carriageworks

What is a Greenroom?
A Greenroom is a small scale play produced to give members the experience in directing, producing and performing in plays. The play will be an abridged version of the main play, costumes and props will be kept to a minimum and tickets are at an flat, affordable rate.

There are also opportunities for some of our teen members to get involved with the behind the scenes roles (directing, stage managing, lighting and sound) - anyone interested should speak to Dan directly. 

We hope to see you all at the Readthrough and auditions for this play.

*Casting announcement emails*

Thank you to everyone who auditioned this week for our next production - ‘Puppet’. With more than 30 auditions for 17 roles the team had some incredibly difficult decisions to make. But fear not… we have a cast and emails will be going out to everyone tonight and tomorrow to let you all know.

Emails are individual for each member so please bear with us as it takes quite a while to get them all sent - if you haven’t received your email by Monday tea time, please get in touch.

Thank you again for your interest in this brand new show.

For those who don’t get a role in this play, there is also our Greenroom production of The Owl and The Pussycat in September - auditions for that are on 10th June 2026. More details to follow.

🌟 Last night was fantastic! Thank you to everyone who came and joined us in reading through the script for our next show, Puppet by David Almond (adapted by David Almond and Freya Almond-Palmer)! It was an extremely busy evening. We even ran out of chairs! 🌟

💖 We were lucky enough to have the writers in the room with us and David gave us some wonderful insight into some of the inner workings of the characters. 💖

🎭 Tonight we begin our auditions. They are open to anyone who would like to audition for a part and they’re taking place at the between 6:30 and 8:30. We can’t wait to see some inspiring performances! 🎭

Our beautiful scripts have arrived for the BRAND NEW play Puppet!
Just in time for the read through, TONIGHT! At the Carriageworks theatre, Leeds, starting at 6.30pm.

Puppet was adapted from David Almond's 2024 book, by David Almond and Freya Almond-Palmer, and has never been performed before. So we have had these scripts made up for the actors to use in rehearsals - and they're so pretty!!

We are very excited about the read through this evening and the auditions tomorrow and Thursday!

*Fleur* (12+) – Kind, brave, imaginative
*Silvester* (Male, 70+ playing age) – Retired puppeteer, gentle and inspiring
*Puppet* (Any gender, any age) – Curious, playful, strong movement (on stage most of the show)
*Narrators* (Any gender) – Confident performers, multi-role, movement & puppetry
*Antonia* (Adult female) – Fleur’s warm, encouraging mum
*Louis* (Adult Male, 30–50) – Friendly, enthusiastic (+ multi-role)
*Butcher* + roles (Adult Male, 30–50) – Gruff but versatile character actor
*Rosa* + roles (Female, any age) – Physical performer, puppetry/movement
*Lisette* + roles (Adult female) – Kind bakery owner, multi-role
*Ensemble* (Any age) – Movement, puppetry, storytelling (some non-speaking roles)
