The School of Media, Culture & Society at UWS and the Ayr Gaiety Partnership have collaborated to secure funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a three year funded PhD studentship, with an annual stipend of £14,296.

The successful applicant will work closely with a Community Archivist, a Heritage Co-ordinator and a broader team of staff, volunteers and community members to gather, explore, document, and develop performance-based responses to the substantial heritage assets of Ayr’s Gaiety Theatre, which is currently in the final stages of a £2.4m refurbishment. The HLF project aims to engage large numbers of local people in understanding and interpreting the rich resources and histories of the theatre and related performing arts activities in South Ayrshire. A digital archive, regular interactive exhibitions and performance activities are key outputs for the project as a whole; the PhD studentship focuses on performance and theatre-led activities and events.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates who have appropriate academic and practical experience in theatre-making, performance and participatory approaches to public arts practice and research. We encourage creative and imaginative approaches to the brief and would expect that the candidate will develop a set of practice-led, participatory responses to the project, combined with substantial theoretical and analytic reflection on the process and context of the work undertaken.

The studentship offers an annual stipend of £14,296 per annum for three years and payment of tuition fees (current value £4052). Studentships are open to Home/EU candidates with a first degree in a relevant discipline. Non-EU students can apply, but will not receive the stipend and will be required to pay fees. How to apply: Postgraduate Degree by Research Applications should be completed online at View Website without all relevant documents will not be considered. Please quote the Project Reference Number. The deadline date for applications is 19th September 2016.

Further information about the project, including the HLF project delivery plan of which this studentship forms part, can be obtained on request from the Director of Studies at UWS, Graham Jeffery ([email protected]) . For more information about the Ayr Gaiety Theatre, please visit www.ayrgaiety.co.uk, and for further information about the School of Media, Culture and Society see www.uws.ac.uk/mcs. The project supervision team will also include Professor Gayle McPherson and Jeremy Wyatt, Chief Executive of the Ayr Gaiety Partnership. The successful applicant will be based both at UWS’s Ayr Campus and at the Gaiety Theatre. We anticipate a project start in October 2016, although a February 2017 start is also possible.

WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITY WITH CHOREOGRAPHER & PERFORMER FRANK WILLENS

Everything I ever was and might not never be

A two-day workshop on presence, movement, repetition, resurrection, being, the other, architecture, and empty space.

Monday 13 April, Tuesday 14 April 2015.

11am-5pm West Yorkshire Playhouse

Frank Willens is a household name in the Berlin contemporary dance scene. The native Californian has lived in Berlin since 2003 where he has collaborated with various choreographers over the years including Meg Stuart, Laurent Chétouane, and Nico and the Navigators. Since 2006 he has worked intimately with Tino Sehgal both as a producer and interpreter as well as installing various works including ‘Kiss’ which was presented at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds in February of this year. Frank's own works primarily take place in architecturally dynamic spaces which range from multi-leveled car parks to wholesale warehouses, dilapidated factories to construction sites, and even in theatres.

His works are physical, interactive, often utilise text, and always confront the viewer directly.

In this two-day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to engage with Frank’s process and practice and learn more about his approaches to developing site-responsive work. The workshop will take place in a studio at West Yorkshire Playhouse, as well as involving research and exploration out in the city. This workshop also forms part of a series of initial research Frank is undergoing in order to develop a future project for ‘Transform’.

This workshop takes place on Monday 13 April & Tuesday 14 April – on Wednesday 15 April there will be an optional opportunity to explore some of the concepts from the workshop further.

The opportunity is open not only to dancers but all creative types who are present in their bodies and comfortable working physically.

If you are interested in participating – please send your expression of interest to [email protected] by 5pm on Monday 6 April.

The number of participants is limited so please send a recent photo of yourself and CV in order to apply, as well as a short description of why you are interested in the opportunity

Former Workshop Theatre student Mike Bartlett credits former WT colleague in this lovely piece in the Guardian.

Playwright Mike Bartlett knew he wanted King Charles III to be a Shakespearean drama – a family epic in five acts, complete with a ghost and a comic subplot. But would writing in iambic pentameter prove too great a challenge?

First years! You will all spend the weekend of 11 and 12 October in Studio 1 working with actor and director Gari Jones, constructing a response to Martin Crimp's Attempts on Her Life, with a view to performing that response on the Sunday evening. Please make sure you keep that weekend clear of other commitments or arrangements. Ta.
