Slung Low

Slung Low Slung Low is an award-winning theatre company specialising in making epic productions in non-theatre All work presented at The Holbeck is Pay What You Decide.

We manage The Holbeck in South Leeds: the oldest working men’s club in Britain, running the bar as a traditional members’ pub and the rest of the building as an open development space for artists and a place where we invite other companies to present their work that otherwise might not get to be seen in Leeds. Company equipment and vehicles are lent to those who have need; it is a useful place tha

t shares its resources with those artists who need them. In Autumn 2018 Slung Low launched a Cultural Community College based in Holbeck; a place where adults come to learn new cultural skills – from stargazing to South Indian cooking, from carpentry to singing in a choir. All workshops, supported by Paul Hamlyn Foundation, are provided on a Pay What You Decide basis. We’re the home of Holbeck Moor FC: a football club with women and men’s teams that practices at 18:30 on a Wednesday. No fees, open to all. We believe that access to culture is a fundamental part of a happy life. We believe that actions, however small, can have a big impact. We believe that culture can change our world for the better.

Well, have we got a show for YOU!

And don’t just take our word for it! You can listen back to theatre maker Paula Varjack talking all things NINE SIXTEENTHS on BBC Radio’s Woman’s Hour, starting 45 mins 16 seconds into the show and if a “pop culture odyssey” sounds like your idea of a good Saturday night out, get booking!

Nine Sixteenths is a journey through 3 acts, exploring themes of representation and pop culture with a nostalgia for the early 00s, and the hopes and dreams of 4 black female performers through a visual variety of devised theatre, dance and lip sync.

Tickets are flying out the door for this show, which has fully integrated BSL, and comes to The Warehouse in Holbeck on Sat 9th May.

Following sell out performances in 2024, Bus Stop Goths is a surreal modern folk tale which centres around alt youth and their sacred outdoor spaces where they reside. It’s a joyfully chaotic celebration if youth expression and identity.

Join celestial beings Sid and Viv as they keep a watchful eye on the streets of Middlesborough.
There are fascinating human beings out there, some are not like the others, they’ve formed their own groups, their own cultures, their own small societies.

What will Viv and Sid discover about these sub-cultures from look in in on them? And more importantly what will they discover about themselves?

“Deeply moving and completely unhinged, the standing ovation at the end of this performance was well-deserved. Bus Stop Goths is a show for the outcasts, and in that hour I’ve never felt more accepted”. NARC Magazine
