New at Tropical World 🌿

We’ve installed brand‑new boards shining a spotlight on our partnership with SEED Madagascar and the incredible Project Phelsuma 🦎

Together, we’re supporting efforts to protect the critically endangered Antanosy gecko, its fragile habitat, and the local communities working hard to safeguard it.

📍 Next time you visit, head to Creature Corner to meet our Yellow-headed Day Gecko and Madagascar Day Gecko, two dazzling ambassadors for their wild cousins!

📲 Look out for the QR code on our new boards to discover how YOU can help protect these beautiful geckos.

Let’s make a difference together!

Bee surveying is back for 2026 🐝

Our Tropical World team is once again surveying bees at Roundhay Park to help monitor local populations and support conservation work across Leeds. It’s been a slow start to the season (due to the cooler weather), with just 2 bees recorded in March:
• White-tailed bumblebee – 1
• Buff-tailed bumblebee – 1

Things were picking up in April, with 9 bees spotted across 4 species:
• White-tailed bumblebee – 4
• Buff-tailed bumblebee – 1
• Honeybee – 3
• Ginger bumblebee (possibly common carder) – 1

These surveys help us understand how bees are doing and support efforts to protect these vital pollinators 🌼

Keep an eye out for more updates across the season 👀

Water can be more dangerous than it looks ⚠️

Whether it’s canals, rivers or lakes, the risks are real—for everyone. Cold water shock, hidden hazards and slips can turn a normal day into an emergency.

In an emergency, call 999 and ask for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Do not be tempted to enter open water to cool down.

Even in high summer, waters across the UK remain cold enough to trigger cold shock. This can cause rapid breathing and reduced muscle control, making it much harder to swim safely.

Stay Safe. And, if you see someone in trouble in the water, make the right call - call 999! 📲

Reptile surveys have been taking place throughout April and May and the results so far are encouraging 🦎

So far we’ve recorded:
• 4 surveys completed
• 3 common lizard spotted

While numbers are still low, these sightings tell us something important, lizards have been found at different points across the survey area, suggesting they are inhabiting a decent range of the habitat 🌿

So far, all individuals recorded have been female, with one appearing to be gravid (carrying eggs), which is a really positive sign for the population!

Surveys may be pausing over the hottest months, then restarting again in August and September. We’ll keep sharing updates as we learn more about these elusive reptiles living in Leeds 👀
