INTRODUCING LYO'S NEWEST ADVENTURE...
Leeds Youth Opera is relaunching and regrouping and we are so excited to be producing a brand new musical in July 2023 based on the life and adventures of explorer Ernest Shackleton!

We are welcoming all new performers, particularly in the 10-19 years bracket, although older singers are very welcome too.
Shackleton the Musical was premiered at the Brighton Fringe and the Watford Festival to critical acclaim and in front of Ernest Shackleton’s granddaughter, who loved it. The writers are so very proud that LYO will be performing the first production of the musical in the North!

“Stranded on the ice in the middle of the Southern Ocean for over a year with no way to get a message home, Shackleton and his crew set out on their epic tale of survival against the odds. After the sinking of their ship, the Endurance, their mission becomes to find a way home before they succumb to the fate of many Antarctic explorers before them.

With supplies running low, and the ice melting around them, they have nothing but three small boats, their good spirits and Shackleton to turn their fate around. This extraordinary journey uses the power of theatre to bring you into the lives, loves and spirit of these men as they endure the ultimate test of the human spirit.”

We’re looking forward to starting the season on January 7th, 2.30 to 5pm at Interplay Theatre Armley. We cannot wait to welcome new and existing members to this wonderful community which has produced fantastic productions in Leeds for over 50 years.

The Carriageworks Theatre - The last Community Theatre in Leeds

Historically, since the mid-1920s when the British Drama League took over the running of the ‘Albert Hall’ within the Mechanics Institute in Cookridge Street, Leeds City Council has long valued the objectives and work of community arts in central Leeds. The facilities made available to groups have been suitable, accessible for people who work all day, with reasonable, affordable charges. Alterations to the ‘Albert Hall’ took place in 1949, a proscenium arch and dressing rooms added and the building was officially named the Leeds Civic Theatre. It was recognised that providing these facilities would be beneficial for community use, especially young people. Many groups and Societies took advantage of these facilities and in 1950, an umbrella organisation – Leeds Civic Arts Guild – was formed to represent all the groups. Now known as Leeds Community Arts Network (Leeds CAN), this organisation supports 14 groups with 800 members, covering Music, Drama, Dance, Opera, Creative Writing, Musical Theatre and numerous Youth Groups.

The Civic Theatre was closed in 2005, but the Council reinforced its commitment when the venue was replaced by The Carriageworks Theatre complex in 2005. This was after an arduous campaign to secure the development of this new home for community arts organisations in the city. The campaign was led by The Yorkshire Evening Post and was supported by numerous national and international bodies that recognised the importance of the Leeds Civic Arts Guild. This view was supported by local politicians and high-profile celebrities, and the campaign gained huge media attention across the UK.

The Carriageworks Theatre cost £5m in taxpayer money, and was intended to be the home of Community Theatre in Leeds, hosting numerous arts groups and supporting all Community Arts. The Carriageworks also has a large workshop within it, allowing any community group to build their own sets onsite - one of the most important things to have in a home Theatre.

Now, all of this is being taken away from the Community.
