We are looking forward to hearing Opus13 play Images from the Floating World by Britta Byström, a piece described by Edition Wilhelm Hansen as ‘weaving delicate lines into shifting, luminous textures.’

Byström took inspiration from a 10th century Icelandic saga called Njal's Saga. In this story, a feud between Icelandic settlers escalates through the characters' increasing attempts to defend their masculinity and family's honour. This climaxes in Njal Thorgeirsson's family home being set on fire. Njal's nephew Kari seeks to avenge his Uncle's death, but he is persuaded to participate in an epic trial, before the fire-setters are exiled.

🎟 Hear the influence of Njal's Saga in Opus13's performance on 16th June. Visit leedsconcertseason.co.uk for tickets!

Britta Byström was born in Sundsvall, Sweden, also the home country of two members of our Quartet in Residence Opus13: violist Albin Uusijärvi and cellist Daniel Thorell. 🎶

As one of the most performed Nordic composers alive, who has composed over 100 works, she is the perfect composer for Opus13 to introduce to Leeds, with their aim of bringing Nordic music to audiences abroad.

‘Byström’s music demonstrates a special attention to sound and a sensitivity for the music’s resonance that could be described as impressionistic.' (Edition Wilhelm Hansen)

Stay tuned for more information about her piece Images from the Floating World, which Opus13 will perform in Leeds on 16th June. Visit leedsconcertseason.co.uk for tickets and more info! 🎟

Will a boomerang always make a perfect return? Book tickets to hear Opus13 play Bumerang on 26th May. 🎶

Composer Knut Vaage describes his piece as being ‘made up of contrasting sections that keep turning back, albeit never exactly to the same starting point.’

Expect to hear a 'different use of the instruments, such as hitting the end of the bow against the strings, sliding squeals, playing on the wrong side of the chair and much more’ (Guttorm Ihlebæk, Fredrikstad Blad) in what Vaage describes as an 'exploration of the instruments' anatomy'.

Vaage is 'very excited to experience the young and award-winning quartet Opus13’s interpretation of the piece.'

🎟 Get excited with us! Book tickets to hear Opus13 play Bumerang by visiting leedsconcertseason.co.uk.

By performing Knut Vaage’s 'Bumerang' on 26th May, Opus13's violinists Sonoko Miriam Welde and Edvard Erdal will be introducing Leeds to a composer from their home country.

Trained at the Grieg Academy in Bergen, Knut Vaage is known for exploring the boundaries between improvisation and composition, and for the development of a hybrid acoustic/electronic soundscape. His opera 'Someone Is Going to Come' has been recently performed in Oslo, Copenhagen and Vienna.

Next week, we will share more about his piece 'Bumerang', which Opus13 will perform on 26th May at The Venue (Leeds Conservatoire).
