I'm often asked how I know when something is finished. The real answer is i don't, there's always nore marks to be made. This one of Thirsk I can't seem to leave alone, for example. I thought I was done with it when I left my sketching spot and went home the other week, but something kept bugging me about it: it felt unfinished somehow. It's since had collage elements, more watercolour, a bit more definition, and some found text about the swifts from the RSPB magazine, and it's... I don't know? Finished? Maybe? Is it an improvement ? Either way, adding swifts and swallows to this place, where they can be seen wheeling about through the sky from April until August, probably helps capture the essence of it all.

A very big thank you to RSPB Bempton Cliffs for having me over to paint the gannet chicks at the weekend! Seems like everyone enjoyed it, and we were so efficient we even had time to do some very rapid 5 minutes swallows at the end of the session. Amazing what you can capture with so few brush strokes.

Feral pigeon. Once, a man I met told me he'd pay me to never paint a pigeon. I didn't take any money from him, so here we are. Anyway, they're very sweet birds. They're sociable and can be good friends to humans. I don't know why some people are so down on them 🤷

A huge thank you to Pateley Bridge Art Club for having me over to do a demo on Tuesday. It was a great night, biggest crowd I've drawn for to date, lots of great discussions, having my setup lit and filmed by a retired TV professional, good tea and biscuits. Lots of people who are living very interesting lives now live in Pateley Bridge - who knew?
Anyway, here's the piece I did on the night. For once, some of the weirdness isn't mine: a number of suggestions from the group were followed up on, including a black terrier called George, and a parrot living in the window of a carpet shop. I also got a lovely write up in their newsletter, in which they describe me as "a great *young* artist". Mark it well.

Last weekend was pretty full on. We went up to Sutton Bank National Park Centre with my artwork for their first artisan fair. From there you can see what they claim is the finest view in England. I suppose that's subjective, but we are lucky enough to have Norman Ackroyd's rendition of said view hanging in our house (3rd pic). From there, it was straight back to Leeds for a gig. Then Sunday was spent, among other things, heading back north to capture Thirsk (first & second image).
After all that on Monday I was left feeling... Not great. A creative life can be nourishing, but it's easy to overdo it and to have the opposite effect. I think the moral of the story is not to behave like you have the energy of a 20-something-year-old when you're... Yeah... Not twenty-something any more. Also, proper down time and fluids are good.

This should be a grand day. Baby gannets are some of the most ridiculous creatures on the planet, and we'll be painting them at exactly the time when - if we're lucky - the first ones are starting to hatch on the cliff side!
