📣 Something wicker this way comes... We've curated a major new season of Myth & Ritual: Folklore on Film throughout July & August here at HPPH! 🥳

From the UK horror classics of Blood on Satan's Claw and The Wicker Man, to the more obscure delights of The White Reindeer from Finland, Australia's atmospheric Celia, and the magnificently unique and beautiful Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari from the banks of the Volga River in Russia.

There will also be short films, introductions, panels, podcasts, talks, journal pieces and lots more to look forward to 👀
Myth & Ritual: Folklore on Film is presented in association with the lovely people at STUDIOCANAL Presents, and with artwork by the incredible folk-obsessed Bunty May of Hwæt Zine.

Won't somebody please think of the children? Don't worry, we have! We're not trying to traumatise our smallest audience members by showing family films with heavier themes as part of Bleak Week, we promise! Experiencing difficult emotions in film and fiction can be a safe and valuable way of learning to process similar challenges when they come up in children's own lives.

✨ As one of our favourite filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki says, "The world isn't simple enough to explain in words." ✨

So, join us for our toddler screening of All Dogs Go To Heaven tomorrow at 11:00 & our Pay What You Can screenings of Watership Down on Saturday & Sunday. Older children who don't mind reading subtitles might also enjoy our screenings of Grave of the Fireflies on Wednesday or Thursday.

We're delighted to present a 4K restoration of Wake in Fright as part of Bleak Week this Saturday at 22:00.

The event will begin with an introduction by Wilfrid Kirby Clarke, curator of Leeds DIY Film Club Suspicious Sounds Presents.

Our Sunday choice for Bleak Week is Make Way for Tomorrow, which Orson Welles said was "the saddest movie ever made". But it's also one of the lesser-known masterpieces of Golden Age Hollywood, a tragic yet moving Depression-era drama about family and ageing that we think you'll love.

Today is ! It's too early to have a drink, so we're celebrating by showing you this amazing fragment of our history we found during our redevelopment.

As we dug into the basement to create Screen Two, this beer flagon fragment was found underground in front of the Picture House. Dating from around 1912, this Rea & Haworth Botanical Breweries flagon potentially pre-dates the cinema itself. It's likely from the Brudenell Road Social and Recreation Club, which was on our site just before our cinema opened, and before the Brudenell Social Club found its home in the place we know and love today in 1913.

You can learn more about our history here: hpph.co.uk/history, or you can wander round and read our new interpretation signs while you enjoy one of our Kirkstall Brewery or Vocation Brewery beers 🍺

The third photo shows what the full flagon would have looked like.
