The Birth of a Hurdle

(we did have an actual birthday person hurdling, too. I made it sound in the last post as if we just had healthy soup . Truth is, we had gooey chocolatey cake too to fuel our fingers! But this is social media... gotta preserve the image)

Hurdles, hurdles, hurdles! It must be a pre-spring thing. 1 pumpkin soup, 4 billhooks , 10 keen people, 20 hands, 500 hurdling rods and 6 hours later: 5 fully fledged hurdles for the Lapwing housing co-op in Halton, to replace the rotten fence panels. Claver Hill´s own industry spies Wendy and Viv will seed the skills among the vegetables with their inspiring grip on all things woodwork. Thanks Anna Clayton for the vision of low-mileage garden-fencing and skill teaching, and for an exte-remely well organised and joyful day of hurdle teaching - come rain or shine :-)

It has been a while... one of my young people needed good support to get further away from the cliff edge, which meant no posts the last few months. Very scrumptious day in the South lakes with this awesome workshop creating the final celebratory art piece for a 5-year project on temperate rainforests. I learnt that we are fortunate to have some of this rare type of habitat in the South lakes area , due to that warm frequent rainfall.

Hammocking under the stars for the equinox with my friend Beccy. Any dishevelled looks put them down to a cold night and a split zip on the sleeping bag. It was lovely sleeping in the arms of a massive Rowan tree and chatting as night fell - And then such an amazing glowing morning! Today would have been my dad's 103rd birthday and I always try and do something nice on his birthday as he tended to work a lot and not take time for such treats... Happy birthday, Nikolaus!

Green, green, green! Encouraged by an appointment with I'm upgrading my nutrition. We went for an autumn walk with my youngest son and picked a big bag full of greens for pots and pans, fresh dandelion, plantain, woundwort and the second crop of nettles. We also
now have more family members. They love Rowan berries! The berries fit perfectly between their little paws, see last two pictures

"Befriending the natives..." - I have finally figured out a good use for bindw**d, this merciless usurper of waste sides and gardens alike. Here used in conjunction with soft rush, juncus eff., with the right processing it weaves beautifully, having a slight silky shine once dried. I have now worked my way through most of the hill behind my house, coiling up ready for the winter to reuse. And who knows - maybe the strength and resilience of the bindw**d and soft rush will infuse me as I wear it daily. * The view inside from above shows a crystal, nicely kept from falling out by the sticky out teeth of the uprights (having been woven back inside after finishing them off as a classical three rod basket border). What are your creative uses for bind w**d?

" ...you shall have a fishy/ in a little dishy..." Teaching willow fishy making to lots of lovely punters at for the 50 th anniversary of the reopening. Accompanied by stars with floaty ribbons, Stars covered in paint and home made wooden mallets in rainbow colours and other patterns. It's wonderful the way children get involved and engrossed given the right space and materials. It felt special being right in the main room of the mill and watching the mill wheels going. A really satisfying day passing on some Willow skills from ages four to 60 something! Fishies are definitely ageless... # Willowweaving
