Moira Hay Artworks From a working lifetime in illustration I now produce art which merges image and text to explore our relationship with the natural world.

Since my cataract operation about a month ago, I'm astounded by the clarity, and colour-changes in the re-lensed eye. Closing each eye separately, I'm made very aware of the dull yellow cast over the untreated eye. This has clearly had an effect on all the artwork I've done over recent years. Looking over the pieces I produced for last Autumn's exhibition, I'm surprised at the richness of the colours - even this appropriately, sombre image contains far more colour than I'd originally (thought) I'd used. Tomorrow, I go for a post-op assessment, and will be booked-in to have the remaining cataract removed and re-lensed. It can't come soon enough!

I've been unable to post on my Page recently - domestic and medical issues (mine and my partner's) have taken precedence for some months - not the least of which was my cataract operation last Tuesday. With very poor eyesight, I've been a lifelong spectacles wearer (since about 5yrs old). It's a wonder that I ever pulled-off the notion of making images for my living! This current unexpected transformation is little short of astonishing - my worst eye has been re-lensed and following the (short-term) pain and visual disablement - so far, in that eye, I now have 20/20 vision. The aim of a cataract op is to remove the cloudy lens, not necessarily to eliminate the need for spectacles, but this . . . colour, uber-clarity, depth of field - *everything* is enhanced. Someone clicked the image filters in my head, and for the first time in my life, I can see!!! Was this new world there all along? My other eye will be done as soon as the post-op assessment is 'approved'. From an artists' point of view (pun intended) this is nothing short of a miracle. Heaven knows how or if, it will change my artwork. I will still need (minimal) correction specs for closer tasks, and for a while will not be able to fully resume my work, but for now am in free-fall, with old visual perceptions melting away.

Anselm Kiefer's "Le Alchemiste," a monumental, site-specific exhibition that pays tribute to forgotten women alchemists, is now on view at Palazzo Reale in Milan. Presented as part of the cultural programming for the Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games, the immersive presentation invites visitors to engage with works that reflect on history, painting, and female memory through forty-two large-scale canvases.
Here, Kiefer gives voice to several female alchemists who have been largely forgotten by official history, bringing to light what has been buried: faces and bodies emerging from his canvases like apparitions, revealing a world of female intelligence that was persecuted and concealed, yet was essential to the birth of modern scientific thought: https://on.gagosian.com/3ZoAXLf

One from the archives, but it seemed wholly apt for tonight... as the time approaches, wishing everyone a happy and peaceful New Year 2026.

To all Family, Facebook Friends, Followers, and anyone I'm not able to send a physical card to. . . 'Peace and Goodwill to All for Christmas and New Year' - Heaven knows we need this more than ever. May this turning point in the calendar be celebrated just how you would like it - in company, in precious solitude, with exuberance or in deep quiet - to see us safely through into 2026.

Edited 26/12/2025 to include re-worked text "There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls" (George Carlin) Somewhat belated Winter Solstice greetings to one and all. 'WolfMoon' still a work in progress - here's hoping this end-of-year hiatus will pass, so I can return to more creative pursuits, tho' an unforeseen cataract operation will halt things for a bit. Clarity will resume after the New Year!

Doodle-a Day - "Just Do It: Tuesday"... except it's a cheat. My day was unexpectedly subsumed by errands and just not being here, so rather than leave the day void of artwork, here's a doodle I started some time time ago, had several tryouts with, but never quite settled on a finished version. Might be (somewhat obviously) called 'Conjunction'.

Just when I should be producing for the Christmas season, I'm doodling... whether I can produce a Doodle-a-Day is open to conjecture - but here's today's - "Just Do It: Monday". And inspired by an artist friend, I was listening to Tord Gustavsen Trio 'The Other Side' as I finished.

Last year, I produced a number of seasonal greetings cards, some of them bi-lingual - Welsh & English - which sold successfully at a local Christmas Fair. I enjoyed the creating, the making and the experience of selling direct. I'll post all the designs on this Page as soon as I can - here's just one of the cards (blank inside, for your own greeting). If you'd like to buy a small pack, I'll include prices, but please message me in the meantime for further details.
