The news of Dolly Parton's passing took us all by surprise, hitting us far harder than you might expect. We're not about to claim that she was a massive musical infulence on us, let's face it we're a long way from country! But as a band full of fathers we are all acutely aware of Dolly's substantial contibution to humanity just as much as her music.
Given her massive success Dolly could have been a billionaire and hoarded that fortune like the rest of them. Instead she chose to invest her fortune not in herself, but in the children who will shape the future. Our children knew Dolly as "The book lady" long before they knew her music. She is at least in some part responsible for our childrens love of reading and the literacy skills that will help them succeed in life.
We had already been working on the idea of this cover for a few months when we heard the news, and already had practice booked with the intention of finishing it off. So rather than keeping it secret for a gig later in the year we figured why not share our take on one of her classics.
I think the last line of the final chorus, "it's a rich mans game, no matter what they call it and you spend you life putting money in his wallet" shows that Dolly understood the absurdity of capitalism and corporate greed. Her selfless actions indicate she chose to reject it. She may have sung country music but Dolly's attitude was punk AF.
