Mining Road Trip
We had a small trip to Cardenden yesterday to pick up some mining plates. We have 3 local mine plates to add to the Lang Toun Little Museum.
Norrie Menzies also kindly donated 3 great items for our Museum, a miners pick axe from Seafield and two Deputy sticks.
'A Deputy's Stick or Gas Probe was used by mine deputies and shotfirers, it allowed miners to test for dangerous, explosive gases (like methane or "firedamp") in the upper, out-of-reach areas of a coal seam or roof. An aspirator bulb and a tube attachment would be attached to the stick. Deputies would squeeze the bulb to draw gas samples from high, inaccessible cavities in the mine roof. '
We also stopped off at the impressive mining memorial at Lochore Country Park on the way back.
Remember to visit the wonderful Mining Museum at West Wemyss this summer, just along the road from Kirkcaldy, the Old Wemyss Ways Heritage Centre, 65 Main St, West Wemyss, Kirkcaldy KY1 4SP.
We sell various mining treasures at Fife Forge on behalf of the Old Wemyss Ways Heritage Centre, with proceeds going towards supporting both our Museums.
Mining was a tradition and way of life that was once synonymous with Kirkcaldy and Fife. It was also a dangerous one in which many men, women and children lost their lives in pursuit of the black gold; over 15000 in Scotland alone. Least we forget.
