This game started life as a disaster. An aimless exploration game with tedious and repeatable things needing to be done that gave a very 'rinse and repeat' feel. Gamers initially flocked to it, the promise of 18 quintillion planets to explore peaking their expectations. But in no time at all, they abandoned it in their droves.
So what happened? Why does thus 'disaster' if a game now have such a huge, almost cult following? Well, the answer to that is simple. Care, love and devotion. Yup, the devs stood by their game. They cared enough to listen to gamers. They loved enough to want to improve their product. And most importantly, they were devoted enough to do so. And boy, did they improve it.
Right now, we are at update 14 (I think). FREE update 14 I must say. These devs realised that their product wasn't what even the envisaged so they fixed it. Free. No DLC or micro transactions, FREE. The game is now a wonderful, open exploration of the galaxy. Relaxing, stressful, hapoy, sad, vanilla, exciting, it manages to be all those things.
A main story line takes you on a journey to the centre of the galaxy. But, there's 18 quintillion planets to visit and you WILL get side tracked... Many times. Explore, mine for resources, build, craft, trade,fight,its all there. Want to just travel the galaxy as a trader? That's fine. Different star systems have different demands for goods. You can make a fortune. Want to just explore the galaxy? Fix up the hyper drive and go wherever you want. Scan minerals, plants and animals across the galaxy. You can even be a space pirate!? Have the authorities hunt you down as you and your high value cargo jump from system to system.
With a fantastic array of things to do, this game has grown up. From an annoying toddler to a clever, A grade teenage student. And it continues to improve with devs still devoted to improving the experience.
Highly recommended. If you just want to stick your xbox and lose 3 or 4 hours, No Man's Sky is the place to be. The first ever review on The Average Gamer gets a solid score.....
