Anns a’ chlàradh seo bho 1967, tha Flòraidh NicCumhais a' toirt iomradh air na diofar phàirtean den chuibhl-shnìomh. B’ ann à Beàrnaraigh na Hearadh a bha Flòraidh (nighean Iain Fhionnlaigh Thormoid). Tha Iain Peadarsan bho Sgoil Eòlais na h-Alba a’ Dèanamh agallamh leatha.

Spinning was a common occupation among women and in some areas there would be a spinning-wheel in almost every house.

In this recording from 1967, Flora Maccuish (1898-1971) explains the Gaelic names given to each part of a spinning-wheel. Flora was from Berneray (Sound of Harris) and is being interviewed here by Ian Paterson from the School of Scottish Studies.

John Strachan from South Crichie in Fyvie sings ‘The Wark o the Weaver’, which praises the toil of the weavers and makes the point that everyone needs the cloth they make. He is being recorded in 1952 by Hamish Henderson of the School of Scottish Studies. John was born in 1875 and was a farmer.
