Did you know the fountain you see here isn't the original?

This is the Colossal Fountain on Boulevard in Hull. The original fountain was built in the **1870s**, when Boulevard was designed as one of Hull's grand Victorian streets. It stood proudly in the centre of this roundabout and quickly became one of the city's most impressive landmarks, welcoming residents and visitors alike.

Sadly, on **27th August 1924**, the fountain's story took a dramatic turn. A motor car crashed into it, causing such extensive damage that it had to be demolished. For more than **80 years**, this historic spot stood without the landmark that had once defined it.

In **2008**, a new fountain was unveiled, inspired by Hull's surviving Victorian fountains and bringing this famous location back to life. So although the fountain you see today isn't the original, it proudly honours the magnificent Colossal Fountain that stood here for over 50 years.

It's incredible to think that a single car accident changed the face of Boulevard for nearly a century. If you enjoy discovering Hull's hidden history, be sure to follow for more local stories.
