It’s been a very long and very busy day installing ‘The Shape of Acceptance’ at Hull Central Library!

The Shape of Acceptance is the result of an artistic collaboration with the Generation Hull Arts Council pupils at Malet Lambert, where through world-building exercises, practical workshops and co-curation activities - and plenty of material from GF Smith - we’ve created this colourful, meaningful exhibition in the library.

It looks incredible in the space - these storied paper figures surrounded by thousands of stories on paper, engaging in a joyful-yet-serious ritualistic ceremony for the benefit of our world... I am so proud of the young people I’ve worked with throughout this project, it’s a beautiful thing we’ve made together!

Huge thanks to Sophie, Sam and Lisa from the Generation Hull team, William from the library and my forever unpaid technician and partner Phil for supporting with install, for TimeBank Hull And East Riding for lending the tree, and all the library staff who helped us out in some way too. A lot of graft and engineering went into today, more than anyone would think! So thank you all so much.

The exhibition is officially open to the public as of Thursday 18 June, running until 30 July, with a special celebration event from 5.30pm on Weds 24 June (free but book: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/exhibition-launch-the-shape-of-acceptance-tickets-1990383265928). The install has left me with achey bones so make sure you go and see it!

I’ve had a lovely day on ’s Tree Connections workshop, facilitated by Onyx Ocean. Had a mooch around Barmston Drain before doing some arting… but of course I got distracted by some mushrooms! They were all growing out of old tree stumps, so still related to trees I suppose 😂 Great afternoon with greater company, thanks to the trees, Onyx and everyone else who came!

Eighty-one ‘Shape of Acceptance’ zines hand-folded and hand-delivered to the The Big Malarkey Festival Hull festival this afternoon - kept dry despite the downpour!

Literally taking place across the road from Malet Lambert, the Big Malarkey is a brilliant annual Children’s Literature festival in East Park. Our zines are being distributed at the festival to advertise our upcoming Hull Central Library exhibition - but more importantly to help share the original story written and made alive by the young people in Malet Lamberts Generation Hull Arts Council.

We’ll have more zines at the exhibition too - so grab one when you go!

First thing to do as Leven Library’s new Artist-in-Residence? Chat with residents to see what type of arty workshops they’d like to do with me over the next nine months!

They came up with some great suggestions, and liked some of the ideas I had to offer… so the next step is whittling down all these options down to what is actually practical!

Thank you to the lovely library staff who looked after me today, and to everyone who stopped and chatted with me about these workshops - it’s been a pleasure co-creating this creative programme with you all 🥰 I’m very pleased to be your resident artist and have some fun together!

✂️ Another FREE workshop alert! 🎨

I will be delivering another session next month for Volunteers - and there’s five spots on the workshop for others in the community to join us!

This time it’s zine making, a popular and accessible DIY artform that’s all about creative expression and sharing your passions with the world 🥰 ask anyone, I do love a zine.

It’s taking place at the Veterans Pavillion, East Park (the building next to Woodford Leisure Centre) on Thursday 16th July between 10.30am and 12.30pm. You don’t need any prior experience, and all materials are provided (although you’re welcome to bring collagey bits on your favourite topic if you want!)

Wanna join us? Email [email protected] to secure your place - it’s first come first serve so don’t mess about!
