Monet's The Petit Bras of the Seine at Argenteuil, 1872 is on display at the gallery as part of The National Gallery Masterpiece Tour.

The “Petit Bras” in the painting’s title means “the little arm” of the Seine. It refers to a narrower stream separated from the main river by the Ile Marante — a small island used as a retreat by locals looking to escape the bustle of Paris.

This quieter setting helps explain the calm atmosphere of the scene Monet chose to capture.
