Three wonderful women are showing Julie Brook is showing 3 major works including the Firestack on the posterHarriet Hellman will show some spectacular new huge ceramics and Lotte Scott’s work memorialises Ash Dieback disease with a poignant installation. Come to the opening on Friday 3rd of July and meet the artists and hear them speak about their exciting work. It promises to be quite spectacular. When I first met Katrin Spranger she was a jeweller - which she still is incidentally - but then last year she decided she wanted to scale up her work and explore using her construction techniques to make bigger installations. So she joined the GroundWork residency- Ground Up- to explore extraction themes and somewhere in this feed archive you can see what she made then. Small trial pieces made from the toxic residues from her jewellery practice and looking like extraordinary landscapes.

But now my goodness has she scaled up her work in every way! It has managed to reference world, nature and universe- and she has a way of giving materials a feel of both substance and lightness - with an edge of eerie Goth darkness. Huge wings dominate her most impressive relief but there are also little delicate works-like a mirror ( with my sneaky selfie) & a torrent of plastic bottles in the main exhibition
Her studio - upstairs at Billet Road Studios in Walthamstow E17 is open all weekend 13-14 June for Walthamstow Art Week and there is also an exhibition Arcana on the ground floor showcasing the work of 18 fellow studio artists if you want to pick up on Katrin’s dark spirit about your person -
Katrin is still a jeweller too and runs an impressive jewellery school in central London. Last pic is my pair. .studio Walthamstow Art Trail 2026 Myka Baum Sarah Horlock Ceramics camerazoo 🏳️‍🌈 Jan-Micha Gamer James Aldridge .artworks Mary Naylor GroundJewels

Still time to apply for this great opportunity - with actual money attached - it is published on Curator Space - from which outline details are here below. The deadline for applications is 14/06/202. The Mannington Nature Award celebrates artistic responses to landscape and the natural world. Open to artists working in any medium, it invites submissions that explore our relationship with nature, place and environment.
Established in 2026, the award is generously supported by the Ellis family, owners of Mannington Hall and Wolterton Hall. .

Artists are invited to respond to themes of landscape, nature and the environment, interpreted in its broadest sense.
Shortlisted works will be exhibited at Mannington Hall, a medieval moated house set within gardens, woodland and farmland that have evolved over many centuries. The setting reflects the spirit of the award, with a focus on landscape, season and the rhythms of the natural world. The judges will be looking for work that demonstrates strong artistic quality alongside a genuine engagement with nature and the environment.

The judges will select a shortlist of works to be exhibited, from which one artist will be selected as the recipient of the award of £2,000. .and.nature.collective

Thanks to everyone who came along to our two events for the Norwich & Norfolk Festival this month to and Tracee Findlater and hosts .baum and David Robertson and at .musuem and GroundWork.

There are still a couple of weeks left to catch the current show and we are open again this week Weds-Sat 11-4pm.

Amongst the new works France Kearney has created for this show are several that find resonances with myths and storytelling around monsters and mythical creatures. 'Kraken' refers to the monster from out of the depths. 'Caliban' to the only inhabitant of Shakespeare's island full of noises, while 'Passage' takes inspiration from the shape-shifting Selkie.

Many of these new pieces are transmutations of plastic in its form as everyday industrial portioned material into something larger, almost organic but uncanny. Now extracted and presented in our environment, these unintended hybrid objects also embody a monstrous and life-threatening longevity which cannot be 'put back' into its original benign form, or its original environment.

The products of this process are presented as large-scale photographs, sculptures, found objects and also as stereo viewer. The stereo viewers evoke a Victorian interest in science and progress which the nurdles of the image calls into question.

As well as the current shoe, do remember to look upstairs where George Nuku's jewellery is on display as part of our collections and Ackroyd and Harvey's full set of Beuys Acorns prints are also displayed and all available to buy from the GroundWork shop in the gallery and online, see link in our bio.

Did you know about our weekly Friday afternoon still-life drawing sessions? When the gallery is open for exhibitions, we have open artist-run drawing sessions which are friendly and open, free, to anyone at all levels of experience. All materials are provided free of charge and there is a good supply of tea, coffee and biscuits.

The sessions are primarily led by artist Catherine Regina Austin-Fell with other artists sometimes running a session.

‘Lots of people claim they can't draw. I put absolutely no pressure, but just arrange a bowl of fruit or vase of flowers and leave paper, pencils and pastels on the table. Each time, people are surprised about what they can come up with, apparently without even thinking. The relaxed atmosphere really helps. I like to make people feel at ease. A good drawing at the end is just a bonus, but never really the aim. However, looking carefully is the beginning of greater awareness – and we need that in order to be mindful of our fragile environment.’ - Catherine Regina Austin-Fell

Some appreciation from our recent drawing participants

'Drawing sessions are life therapy ♥️♥️♥️'

'Drawing! Lots of fun! :)'

Still-life drawing is on every Friday 2-4pm with sessions on 29th May and 5th June during the current show 'Out of the Depths'.
