The most common thing first-timers say when they sit down with Rhia is that they forgot to be nervous.

That's not an accident.

Meet Rhia, our body piercer. Before she ever picks up a needle, she's already done the most important part of her job: made you feel like you're in good hands. She'll walk you through every step, answer the questions you were too shy to ask, and crack a joke right when you need one.

We've watched it happen hundreds of times. Someone comes in white-knuckled, sure they're going to bail. Twenty minutes later they're booking their next appointment and texting a friend to come along.

Whether it's your first piercing or your fifteenth, Rhia's chair is one of the calmest seats in Kettering. Come say hi. ✨

Book with Rhia through our page or pop into the studio.

You walk out of the studio with a fresh tattoo wrapped in a clear, slightly stretchy film. Nobody quite explains what it is, and within 48 hours you're staring at it in the bathroom mirror wondering if you should peel it off.

Don't.

That film has a name: second skin. It's a breathable, adhesive layer (you might hear us call it Dermalize or Saniderm) that seals your fresh tattoo from the outside world while your body does the actual healing underneath.

Here's the logic. A new tattoo is an open wound. Second skin keeps bacteria, fabric fluff and curious fingers out, while letting your skin breathe and drain naturally. You'll see ink, plasma and a bit of fluid pool under it. That's not your tattoo falling out. That's your body doing exactly what it should.

Keep it on for 3 to 5 days unless we tell you otherwise. When you peel it, do it slowly in a warm shower, pulling it back on itself rather than straight up.

Any questions about your healing, message us or pop in. We'd rather answer the "is this normal?" text at 9pm than have you guessing. 🪷

That cloudy, fluid-filled bubble under your second skin after 24 hours? Completely normal. Pulling it off early is one of the fastest ways to wreck a fresh tattoo.

The session is the easy part. The next two weeks are where sharp linework either stays crisp or fades into something patchy and dull.

Three habits we see ruin healing tattoos again and again:

1. Peeling off second skin too soon (it needs 3-5 days)
2. Rubbing dry with a towel instead of patting with clean paper
3. Skipping moisturiser once the soreness fades

None of these feel like a big deal in the moment. All three pull ink out of skin that hasn't finished settling.

Two weeks of simple, boring habits protect the art for a lifetime. Swipe through for the full breakdown, and message us if you're healing a piece and unsure about anything.

Billy Betts here. Let's talk about Japanese tattoos for a minute.

A proper Japanese piece isn't something you slap on and hope it looks right. It has to move with you. The dragon wraps the shoulder because that's where it belongs. The koi swims up the ribs because the body told it to. If the design fights your anatomy, it'll look wrong forever. That's the whole job.

When someone books in for a sleeve or a back piece with me, we don't rush the drawing. I want to see how you sit, how your arm hangs, where the muscle breaks. Then I build the composition around that. Bold lines, deep saturated colour, every element pulling its weight. No filler. No shortcuts.

Traditional work gets the same treatment. The old rules exist because they work. Heavy black, clean colour, designs that still read clearly in thirty years when everything softens.

If you've got a Japanese or trad idea you've been sitting on, bring it to me at Black Lotus. We'll figure out how to make it yours, and how to make it last.

"The more it hurts, the better it looks." That's not how any of this works.

Tattoo myths have a long shelf life. Some come from old-school studios, some from social media, some from a friend of a friend who once knew someone who got inked in a kitchen. A few keep showing up in our chair every week.

Myth: Coloured ink doesn't work on darker skin.
Reality: It absolutely does. Pigment selection, saturation, and contrast all matter. The right artist with the right palette can build vibrant, lasting work on any skin tone.

Myth: Cheap now, fix it later.
Reality: Cover-ups and laser removal cost far more than getting it done properly the first time. Budget for the tattoo you actually want.

Myth: Healing means slathering it in thick ointment.
Reality: Skin needs to breathe. Thin layers, clean hands, no soaking, no direct sun. Aftercare is boring on purpose.

Myth: You'll regret it when you're older.
Reality: Most people regret the tattoos they rushed into, not the ones they thought about. Take your time. Ask questions. Choose an artist whose portfolio speaks to you.

A good tattoo isn't built on myths. It's built on research, communication, and trust between you and the person holding the machine. 🪷

Two artists. Two completely different visual languages. Both at our studio.

Billy Betts specialises in Japanese and traditional work. Bold linework, saturated colour, designs that are placed with intention. Every element earns its place on the skin.

Tate brings something different to the chair. Black and grey where shadow and contrast do the storytelling. Soft gradients, crisp lines, pieces that age like photographs rather than paintings.

Colour and black and grey aren't competing approaches. They're different answers to different questions. Some ideas need the punch of red and gold to land. Others need the quiet depth of grey wash. The right call depends on the design, the placement, and the story you want it to tell.

That's why having artists with distinct specialties matters. You're not adapting your vision to fit one style, you're matching the artist to the work your piece actually needs.

Got an idea brewing? Drop us a message or book a consultation when you're ready to talk it through. 🪷

A lot happens before a single needle touches your skin. Most clients never see it.

The station gets cleaned and prepped. Surfaces wiped, barrier film laid, fresh cartridges unwrapped in front of you. Pigments poured into single-use caps. Machines tested, tuned, calibrated to the artist's hand.

Then the stencil. Every body is different, so placement is mapped to your muscle, your curves, the way you actually move. We take the time to get it precisely right before we ever pick up a machine. Reference images reviewed one more time. Questions about your day, your hydration, whether you've eaten.

None of it is glamorous. None of it makes the highlight reel.

But it's the difference between a tattoo that heals clean and one that doesn't. Between a design that flows with your body and one that fights it. Between an experience you'd repeat and one you'd warn friends about.

The craft you see is built on the discipline you don't. 🪷

Got a fresh piece recently? Here’s the part most people don’t think about until it’s too late.

A brand-new tattoo and a sunny afternoon are not friends. Sun, chlorine, and sweat in those first two weeks can fade your colour, blow out your fine lines, and turn a clean heal into a patchy one.

The good news is it’s easy to avoid if you know what to watch out for. We’ve put together the three biggest summer culprits and how to keep your tattoo looking as sharp in August as it did the day you left the studio.

Swipe through the slides 👇 Two weeks of care protects something you’ll wear for life.
