We are currently having a little rest after a busy few months. But I’d thought I’d share some details about our competitions over the years.
Choir competitions are often seen as being all about results but for us, the real value goes far beyond winning.
Preparing for a competition pushes us to really focus on the fundamentals: tuning, blend, balance, diction, and ensemble awareness. That level of detailed work doesn’t just stay in the competition set, it naturally carries over into everything else we sing. The time and effort we invest lifts our overall standard, often in ways we don’t even realise at first.
There’s also something powerful about working together towards a shared goal. Rehearsals take on a different energy, more focus, more listening, more trust. That sense of teamwork strengthens the choir as a whole, both musically and personally.
Competitions are also a chance to connect with the wider choral community. Hearing other choirs, sharing ideas, discovering new repertoire, and learning from different approaches all help us grow. There’s a real sense of camaraderie, everyone understands the same challenges and joys.
And just as importantly, they’re fun. Travelling together, spending time as a group, and making a weekend of it creates memories that are just as valuable as anything that happens on stage.
So while competitions may last only a few minutes, the benefits stay with us long after shaping how we sing, how we work, and how we support each other as a choir.
