MEET THE MAKER: Deborah Mandale from Deborah Mandale Felts
Hi, I’m Deborah, and I’ve been creating felted artwork from my home in Cumbria for the last 16 years.
I always loved art at school and as a hobby, but studied to be a speech and language therapist at university, and worked in this profession until I had my children. Life then became busy with the family dairy farm and later working in an early years setting.
I was introduced to wet felting by my daughter, who had done a project at school. We bought a kit, and at 5 years old she helped me to make my first picture. I was hooked! I attended a short course and have not stopped felting since. I feel that I learn more each time I create.
I love the lakes and fells. I get excited about the way the light falls and reveals colour in all seasons. This is the inspiration for my art.
I use a combination of wet felting and needle felting techniques to achieve my style. I add texture and interest with fabrics and threads. I love playing with colour combinations and creating a picture that captures a little of the drama of the Lake District and the joy of nature.
The process of wet felting is exciting and surprising- from laying a deep pile of fibres, to soaping, rolling and washing, then how the colours reveal themselves properly once dry. Adding details with a felting needle completes the picture for me and helps me achieve a finished piece I am proud of and happy to sell on my stall. It is always lovely to hear people’s comments and often their surprise at the techniques behind the pictures.
