What a first night on tour!

Every Brilliant Thing hit the road this week, and our first stop in Barrow was a huge success. There were plenty of laughs, wonderfully loud and animated audience participation, a spontaneous singalong to Danger Mouse, someone singing “yoooou” in their best Ray Charles style, and lots of giggles throughout the night.

Around 20 people stayed behind afterwards for a lively post-show conversation about the themes of the play, its impact and the brilliant things that help make life worth living.

And the EBT on Tour team’s Brilliant Thing of the Day... 🍟 Gangster seagulls!

Thank you, Barrow, for giving the tour such a brilliant start.

Next stops...

📍 Workington — Wed 9 Sep
📍 Maryport — Thu 10 & Fri 11 Sep

We’re taking Every Brilliant Thing out into communities across Cumbria — and we’d love you to join us somewhere along the way.

THE FARMER’S WIFE | WEEK 3

And just like that… The Farmer’s Wife is really starting to take shape.

Week 3 of rehearsals brought cake-making, cameras, conversations and A LOT of creative thinking as our world premiere production gets closer to the stage.

Behind the scenes, our brilliant team have been busy bringing the details to life — including making cakes that look good enough to eat (we’re not saying whether they actually are 👀🍰), while the cast and creative team have been filming and recording for TV and radio ahead of opening.

Meanwhile, our tech and creative teams have been getting stuck into the big questions: how do we take this story from page to stage and create the world of The Farmer’s Wife right here in Keswick?

And we’ve even had a rather lovely feature in Cumbria Life. 💚

There’s a LOT happening behind the scenes — and we can’t wait to share what we’re making with you.

🌾 The Farmer’s Wife
✨ A world premiere
📅 Opens 18 September
📍 Theatre by the Lake, Keswick

The countdown is officially on…

✍️ “Just be brave, and know that in that pen there is great power. Use it wisely.” – Hannah Khalil

This Friday, playwright Hannah Khalil will be joining Cumbria Arts & Culture Network’s Friday Zoom to talk about writing The Farmer’s Wife – our brand-new play inspired by Helen Rebanks’ bestselling memoir and the experiences of women from Cumbria’s farming communities.

Hannah spoke beautifully to the Cumbria Times recently about the women who helped inspire the play: “I felt incredibly inspired by these women and their ability to be creative and forward-looking and adaptable.”

Join the conversation on Friday morning and hear more from Hannah about listening to those voices, bringing three generations of Cumbrian farming women to the stage, and creating a new play rooted right here in Cumbria. 🌾

📅 Friday
⏰ 9.30–10.30am

The faces behind the landscape...

We know Cumbria for its fells, fields and dry-stone walls. But Amy Bateman’s Forty Farms turns the lens towards the people who live and work within that landscape.

From farming families to the next generation, these remarkable portraits capture lives shaped by the land – and the individuals helping to shape its future.

See Forty Farms in our Circle Gallery and outdoors on the railings of Hope Park, presented in partnership with Keswick Town Council.

From page to stage… 🌾 Helen Rebanks’ Sunday Times bestselling memoir The Farmer’s Wife is where the journey began.

Now, playwright Hannah Khalil has taken inspiration from Helen’s writing and from the experiences shared by women in Cumbria’s farming community to create something new for the stage.

In our rehearsal film, Hannah talks about that process, while Helen shares what it feels like to watch a new play inspired by her book coming to life here in Cumbria.

Meet director Liz Stevenson, our cast and some of the creative team transforming those words into theatre.

A world premiere, rooted right here.

Thank you for every brilliant thing. ❤️

After a wonderful run in our Studio, Every Brilliant Thing has finished at Theatre by the Lake... and what a few weeks it has been.

Thank you to everyone who came to see the show, laughed with us, talked to us afterwards, visited the exhibition, listened to the records and filled our walls with the things that make life brilliant.

Thank you to the press who came, watched and shared the show with their readers; to the whole TBTL team who have worked behind the scenes and front of house to make this run happen; and to Every Life Matters, PAPYRUS and ANDY’S MAN CLUB for their invaluable support throughout the run — support that continues as we take the production out on tour.

And, of course, a huge thank you to Andy Turner and the entire Every Brilliant Thing company. Now we pack up the show and take it out into Cumbria. 🚐

To everyone who joined us in Keswick: thank you for being part of our list.

Now it’s time to make it a little longer…
