IS MERLIN ENTERTAINMENTS IN TROUBLE? AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN UNIVERSAL ARRIVES?
An interesting article in The Telegraph paints a rather worrying picture for Merlin Entertainments, the company behind Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, Chessington and LEGOLAND Windsor.
And with Universal arriving in Bedfordshire in 2031, the timing couldn't be more interesting!
Merlin is currently the world's second-largest visitor attraction operator, behind Disney, but financially things aren't looking particularly healthy.
The company reported a staggering £426 million pre-tax loss last year, visitor numbers have fallen by almost 10% since 2019, and its borrowing costs have increased dramatically.
Merlin has also been selling off attractions and refinancing hundreds of millions of pounds of debt, including securing new borrowing against assets such as the London Eye and London Dungeon.
To be fair, much of this stems from the pandemic, rising interest rates and the cost of living crisis rather than people simply losing interest in theme parks.
But here's where things get interesting for us.
Universal is preparing to enter the UK market with a brand-new resort, and Merlin is already facing pressure to improve its existing attractions while managing significant debts.
Merlin is investing in new rides and attractions, but will it have the financial freedom to compete with what Universal is planning in Bedfordshire?
Of course, Universal could also bring millions of additional tourists to the UK, potentially benefiting Merlin's parks too.
Could Universal's arrival be exactly the competition Britain's theme parks need, or could it spell serious trouble for Merlin?
And perhaps the bigger question: Will you still be buying Merlin annual passes once Universal opens?
