High-functioning and low-functioning are terms I am not a fan of. It isn't that simple. Many see autism as linear and people don't realise how harmful that can be.
I've been told many times "at least he's high funtioning" because he is able to express himself verbally now and is very advanced in his drawing and maths. I know this is said out of love and from a good place but actually, it is not so black and white.
This diagram, I feel, is a better representation of autism. There are so many different components and autistic individuals can be hyper and hypo sensitive to any of these areas.
It can be hard to keep up with the terminology. I know I struggled and unless you live with autism on a daily basis, how would you know? That's why I must stress that this is a judgement-free page where I want everyone to feel comfortable in asking the tough questions.
This is why I've always said on here that I am an open book because through asking the tough questions, we learn and grow. If we truly want , & we need to ask.
