Paul Hardcastle, the man behind 19. I didn’t know much about him when my big cousin, who experienced the infiltration of drum machines and synths into popular music during the 80s gave me his old HiFi system and a 7” copy of 19. Years later listening to this dated sounding record I realised its connection to dance music but at the time it didn’t really fit, I was a big Basement Jaxx and Armand van Helden fan and the two things just seemed so far apart.
Moving forward another 10 years and we were starting to hear DJs introducing more of an 80s sound, and sudenly everything that had previously made these records sound wrong started making them sound right.
DJing with I started noticing that he quite liked this sound too, but it wasn’t for another 5 years or so that he decided to do a night caled MIDNIGHT MAJIC . So here we are, and here’s a small selection of Paul Hardcastle records which absolutely rock! It turns out he is a bit of a legend of the Italo/electro sound of the 80s… And if that wasn’t enough he produced the sound track for the Spice Girls film, that I hate to admit, I’ve never seen! If you’ve made it this far I’m sure you’ve flicked through all the pics and you’ll have seen that I’ve a club night on this Saturday in Upstairs.

Last call for some retro Italo, funk and disco tonight from 11pm. Why not make it your warm up before the football starts, or maybe even forget the football all together, it’s not like it’s a big deal or anything!

How over the top is this cover?! An old scruffy pre-disco’d copy would have been good enough for me but you can’t say no to a blingy reissue like this when it comes up.

So here’s a last minute club night for you! I’m going to be playing a selection of records that on average will be the same age as me. Hopefully joined by a few guests too. After the success of the last Houshold clubnight I can’t wait to be back in Upstairs.
