We have recently been lucky enough to partner with Yahya's Hub, a small charity working with young, unaccompanied, asylum seekers. I don't tend to post much on this subject - I am wary of virtue signalling and the unhelpful rhetoric from the media and politicians. However today we had the most joyous and engaging group of young people come along to spend some time with us and enjoy a creative couple of hours away from their cares and the tortuous process of seeking a safe refuge.
It's easy to look away or just to think you can do nothing to help. But these young people have fled unthinkable situations. Just stop and think about what makes a 17 year old girl flee her home country and leave her family behind. Or a 16 year boy, who has physical scars to match his far worse mental ones. Or the young man who cannot call home because his family will be executed if he contacts them.
And yet these young people are so full of life and hope. They are DESPERATE to contribute to our society. They don't want to take from us - they want to give - and they bring so much to us. They want to be gardeners, mechanics, chefs, constructions workers - and last time I looked, we were not awash with those skills.
In the words of a very wise friend. We may not be able to change the world, but we can change the world for someone.
Please think about supporting Yahya's Hub - especially if you are a fellow creative here in NE Scotland. I get that we are all busy and it can be a scary thought to welcome strangers in to your creative space. Believe me, I have been there. But honestly, you will find it an uplifting, mind broadening, wonderful experience. I have learned new words in several languages, danced, tried different foods and learned that young people are the same the world over...enthusiastic, hopeful, cheeky and delightful...no matter their heritage. Please support if you can.
