‘From The Inside’ and The Dreamers’ by John Gamble

‘These paintings are split across a border created by two boards, with the final construction 'not quite hidden!
Over this surface a story is created and then broken, leaving a space for the onlooker to step into and take their own journey. Exploring the margins between the world in which we exist and the fragments that make up our memory and imagination’

These subtle and expressive paintings in oil on board are part of our MARGINS exhibition which runs until the end of May. The Solar Gallery is open from 11 to 4 every Saturday and Sunday 🌞

Chris Bailey’s Rock Pools are a series of eye catching ceramics fused with glass. At their best on a windowsill where light bounces off the reflective surface, the mix of rough with smooth makes for a dynamic juxtaposition.
See more of Chris Bailey’s work in our current exhibition ‘MARGINS’, open every Saturday and Sunday from 11 - 4, upstairs in Ilkley Manor House 🌞

‘Nest’ by Jackie Waring is one of the various oil paintings on display on our ‘MARGINS’ exhibition.
At this time of year, the birds all around our gallery in Ilkley’s Manor House Museum are busy collecting twigs and feathers to build nests exactly like this one.

Artist Jackie Waring makes colourful and gestural paintings using acrylics and oils. Her pictures often depict fanciful scenes and semi abstracted forms. But they are rooted in close observation of reality. In the presence of ordinariness, Jackie conjures up imaginative interpretations of her subject. Following a childhood fascination with living things and life cycles, her imagery is frequently overlaid with associated myths and beliefs 🌞

The seasonal Makers’ Fair is in full swing in the Ilkley’s Manor House Museum and we’ve moved our gallery space downstairs into the Heritage Room.
You’ll find the Solar Gallery’s artworks displayed among the Roman artefacts of ancient Ilkley (Olicana), including the original Roman Verbeia Stone and its 15th century copy.
Upstairs are the local Makers’ stalls, offering a wide variety of locally made gifts including jewellery, ceramics, embroidery, wooden pieces and hand forged cutlery. The Makers’ Fair end on Sunday 4th December at 4pm 🌞

‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them’

As you climb the stairs to the Solar Gallery, you’ll pass a beautiful array of textile squares, inspired by the flowers and foliage outside in the Manor House Courtyard, including these beautiful poppies.

The ‘Celebrating the Courtyard’ exhibition
showcases over 30 beautiful textile squares
created by a local sewing group that capture the beauty of the Manor House's courtyard plants and flower beds.
A group of amateur sewers who were involved with the Lockdown Quilt exhibition at the Manor
House in 2021 were keen to develop another
project to support the Manor House and the
lovely plants and colourful spaces of the Manor House courtyard became the focus of that sewing project for 2021/2 🌞

Tea for two, three, or four? Although we think these beakers would look great filled with mulled wine!
Solar Gallery ceramicist Jackie Knight describes her practice:

‘I have been working with clay for 30 years in a variety of ways and it is still a constantly evolving relationship. I am fascinated by form, whether it is the form created or form that inspires creation, human or otherwise.
In particular I love the implied movement of energy,
demonstrated by the shape of the pot through the method
of throwing/making and the decoration/firing.

RAKU:
The excitement and unpredictable outcomes of Raku suit
the way I like to work, the finished vessel revealing unexpected details. The subtlety of the smoke and the
crackle effect of the glazes serve to enhance the suggested form and to emphasize the effect of movement.

STONEWARE:
At present I am exploring the dynamics of decoration on
functional ware - how to create that sense of movement using colour, brushwork and pattern. The fusion of glaze to
the clay is what I love about functional stoneware with its
subdued colors and durability’ 🌞
