Heart of Glass

Heart of Glass North West based arts organisation dedicated to collaborative and social practice across St Helens and Knowsley Art belongs everywhere.

We believe that art has the power to bring us together and create real change, for the people of our community, and the place we call home. We unlock stories, reimagine public spaces, ask awkward questions and forge new connections.

Why? Because we know that art can transform lives and deeply affect our relationship with the world around us. Art is the starting point for each and every journey.

By working with artists and community groups, young people, asylum seekers and refugees, LGBTQ+ people, disabled people, older people and communities of all kinds we support each other – and learn from each other – on creative journeys of enquiry and exploration. We do this because we believe that and every one of us has the right to have our voices heard; our stories celebrated and our curiosity piqued. Our parks, our buildings and our streets. The closer it is to all of us the more it has the ability to illuminate and inspire. Over the past 5 years, through collaboration and conversation, we’ve helped thousands of people to share their stories and learn from the stories of others. We believe that by working together, collaborating, experimenting and listening, the end result can be truly transformative, whether that’s a workshop, an exhibition, a live art show or a festival. http://www.heartofglass.org.uk/about

Q***r Eutopia at Newton-le-Willows station 🌈🚄 has had a little glow up ✨

Created with artists Emma Colbert and Leo Soph Welton alongside LGBTQIA+ young people from The Lee Cooper Foundation and staff at Northern, the work imagines kinder, more welcoming futures for our towns and communities.

The murals at Newton-le-Willows railway station and Prescot railway station platform (geddit?) LGBTQIA+ voices from across the Liverpool–Manchester line, celebrating visibility, care and belonging.

It feels especially important to keep making space for joy, creativity and each other right now 💖

More work and updates coming soon.

We’re proud to be supporting the Million Acts of Hope campaign.

For us, as a community arts organisation working across St Helens and Knowsley, hope lives in what we make - together!

When we build from creativity, care and conversation, we see people coming together to share stories, support one another, build connections and imagine different futures for the places they live.

Art creates spaces for people to feel heard, valued and just be together in difference.

This autumn, we bring together seven years of collaborative work made with individuals affected by su***de in a ground-breaking exhibition at Liverpool's historic Cunard Building.

Close to Home is led by Heart of Glass with award-winning artist Mark Storor, in partnership with Culture Liverpool and Public Health Liverpool, and runs from 3 September to 10 October.

Thoughtfully crafted and deeply immersive, Close to Home is an act of witness - exploring lived and living experiences of su***de and bereavement. Developed in collaboration with communities across England, Ireland and Wales as part of The Su***de Chronicles, it invites visitors into a space for contemplation, reflection, and quiet assembly that will attempt to express and articulate the unsayable while acknowledging those we have lost.

Content advisory ⚠️: Close to Home explores lived and living experiences of su***de and bereavement. It does not depict su***de, but it does engage with themes that some people may find emotionally challenging. You’re welcome to engage in whatever way feels right for you, and support information will be available throughout your visit.
