Wrapped up in the new community quilt, last week was full of joyful quilting, eating, napping, storytelling, zinemaking, music making, and dancing, as we drew artist Keng Keng Tang’s residency to a close.
Since October, Keng Keng has been bringing people together to applique, hand-stitch, and naturally dye textiles, and to stitch them together into a beautiful new community quilt. Through these embodied, slow and experimental textile processes, we have been exploring mutual care, togetherness and rest, inspired by the radical histories of quilting.
Many Hands celebrated Huntly’s new community quilt and everyone who has made it. As Keng Keng shared, these events were for everyone who had contributed to the quilt, to new friends who have been made through the process, and those who couldn't be there with us on the day - particularly community members who were working long shifts as carers.
We want to say a huge thank you to everyone that contributed, including:
🪡 Storyteller Nana Tomova and her tales of care and generosity
🪡 Huntly Scottish Country Dance Club for sharing their new dance ‘The Huntly Quilt’
🪡 Musicians Jake Williams and Teilo Qiu for tunes and songs from Scotland to China
🪡 Teilo Qiu and Keng Keng for teaching us Yunnan Circle Dancing
🪡 Lisa at Super Wok in Huntly, who provided delicious food for the closing events
🪡 Everyone who worked on the quilt including Rosemary and the Huntly Sewcial crew.
And a special thank you to Keng Keng for holding us together throughout the residency with care, generosity and solidarity.
