🔪 The Dark History of Fleet Street 🔪

For centuries, Fleet Street was one of London’s most famous roads, known as the heart of Britain’s newspaper industry. But long before the printing presses and headlines, the narrow streets and alleyways of Victorian London were places of poverty, crime, corruption, and hidden secrets.

It was this dark and gritty world that inspired the legend of Sweeney Todd — the infamous Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Whether fact or folklore, the tale of a barber who exacts revenge on those who wronged him has captivated audiences for generations. Then, in 1979, Stephen Sondheim transformed the story into one of the greatest musicals ever written: a thrilling masterpiece of haunting music, unforgettable characters, and gripping drama.

This September, KYTE invites you to step into the shadows of Victorian London and experience this iconic story brought to life by an exceptional company of young performers.

🔪 A Sneak Peek into My Friends 🔪

Tonight we’re giving you a glimpse into one of the most iconic moments in Sweeney Todd.

In this scene, Harry and Isabella bring to life a pivotal point in the story’s journey as Sweeney is finally reunited with his precious razors.

At first glance, My Friends may seem to be about a barber rediscovering his tools of the trade. But beneath the surface lies something far darker. The song marks the moment when Benjamin Barker truly begins to disappear, and Sweeney Todd emerges once more, consumed by obsession, vengeance, and the promise of retribution.

It’s also a fascinating moment for Mrs Lovett. While she watches Sweeney reconnect with the instruments of his past, she begins to realise the depth of his fixation and the dangerous path that lies ahead.

Musically haunting and dramatically powerful, My Friends is one of the key turning points in the show and a perfect example of Stephen Sondheim’s extraordinary storytelling.

🎭 WOW! What a response! 🎭

We’re absolutely delighted by the number of enquiries we’ve received following yesterday’s post about our new weekly acting classes.

It’s fantastic to see so many parents and young people excited about the opportunities we’re creating here at KYTE for the autumn term.

One of the most common questions we’ve been asked is:

✨ “Can you tell us more about the LAMDA qualifications?” ✨

The answer is YES!

As well as developing confidence, creativity, communication skills and performance techniques through our weekly classes, students will have the opportunity to work towards LAMDA examinations.

LAMDA qualifications are internationally recognised and highly respected across education and the performing arts industry. They help students to:

🎭 Build confidence and presentation skills
🎭 Develop communication and public speaking abilities
🎭 Improve performance and acting technique
🎭 Gain nationally recognised qualifications
🎭 Strengthen college, university and employment applications

For older students, higher-level LAMDA qualifications can also attract UCAS tariff points, which can contribute towards university applications.

At KYTE, we plan to offer examinations in:

✨ Performance
✨ Communication
✨ Musical Theatre

Most importantly, LAMDA isn’t just for aspiring actors. The skills gained benefit young people in every aspect of life—from school presentations and interviews to confidence in everyday situations.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or already have experience, we’d love to welcome you to our growing theatre family.

Places are filling quickly, so if you’ve been considering joining us, now is the perfect time to get in touch.

🎉✨ AN EXCITING DAY FOR KYTE! ✨🎉

We’re officially on the map!

Today, the signage for The Engine Room was installed on the exterior of the mill, and we couldn’t be more excited.

After months of planning, dreaming and hard work, seeing our name proudly displayed for everyone to see feels like a real milestone. Every time we drive past, we’ll probably have to stop and take another look!

We’re incredibly proud to call The Engine Room our home and can’t wait to welcome more people through the doors in the months ahead.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey so far. This is just the beginning. 🚀

Keep your eyes peeled next time you’re passing by—you won’t miss us now!

👑🎤 A Royal Thank You! 🎤👑

What an incredible day we had at our SIX Workshops with Becca Wickes! ✨

We were delighted to welcome so many young performers, including lots of familiar faces alongside many new ones joining the KYTE family for the first time. It was fantastic to see such enthusiasm, energy and passion in the room.

The focus of the workshop was Storytelling Through Song – exploring how performers can bring authenticity, character and emotion to a song, rather than simply replicating what audiences may have seen on stage before. Becca challenged everyone to find their own connection to the material and discover what makes their performance unique.

For those preparing to audition for SIX (Teen Edition), this workshop provided invaluable insight and skills that will support them throughout the audition process. Whilst attendance was not compulsory, we hope everyone who took part left feeling inspired, empowered and more confident in their own abilities.

A huge thank you to Becca Wickes for sharing her experience, knowledge and passion with us. Your honesty, encouragement and expertise made for a truly unforgettable day, and we know our young performers have taken so much away from the experience. 💜

Now the countdown to auditions continues… 👑✨

“The arts make us feel connected to one another and less isolated. Through the arts we share an emotion and that sharing connects us with each other and we realise we all feel the same emotions. The arts are our last hope. We find our identity and make it easier and more pleasurable to live and they also give us wisdom. We see our problems acted out and it’s an important socialising force.”
