The Huddersfield Narrow Canal 21st birthday celebrations are out of the way, so we can start planning this years post-lockdown music festival at Tunnel End on the 31st July. Watch this space and follow the page for more information, but one thing we can announce is that we now have TWICE the capacity to get you there from the car park and Marsden Station. Here’s a snap of our brand new, all electric, little beauty being steered by no less than Robbie Cummins of the BBC’s Canal Boat Diaries. The original Shuttle will be running too if you prefer an old fashioned Diesel engine.

See you there!

🅿️Key Parking Information 2022🅿️

As part of our commitments to being good neighbours and ensuring that roads around our site remain clear for emergency access, we have a parking strategy in place.

Our main car park is located near the railway station in Marsden (150 spaces) which is shared with Marsden Moor NT (Postcode HD7 6DH)

From there, you can board the free Marsden Shuttle (Check times on their page, Donations encouraged) or take the step free 10-15 minute walk down the towpath to reach us at Tunnel End.

♿ We have 6 spaces dedicated to persons with reduced mobility (Blue Badge Required) close to our main attraction (Postcode HD7 6NQ)

Our other spaces close to our attraction are dedicated to our staff and volunteers. Please do not park on either Reddisher Road or Waters Road. This is to ensure that our neighbours can continue to park outside their homes and also ensure that emergency services vehicles can pass freely.

We hope to see you soon!

What you've all been waiting for! The Spooky Stuff is being pulled out of storage to check for scariness, and the skulls are getting a polish too. See you on board, if you dare......!

23/08/2021

Here we go again!

We've decided not to re-start the indoor dance sessions just yet, partly as Honley Village Hall, our regular venue, isn't likely to be available until next year. However, musicians have been keeping the pot boiling on Zoom, so we're pleased to be able to play live music together again. Standedge Visitor Centre is a great venue. Come along to visit the cafe, walk on the towpath or up to Eastergate, have a boat ride on the Marsden Shuttle or venture into the depths of Standedge Tunnel, and listen to some old favourite dance tunes. We're not providing any tuition but if you have previous experience (or just want to jig about a bit) then feel free as there's lots of space.

See you next Monday!

Today would have been the Tunnel end festival. The weather has been lovely. hope its like this next year ;-)

18/05/2020

Sadly, the decision has had to be taken to cancel this years festival. July isn’t too far away and it seems very unlikely that events like this will be possible until the Government decides it’s going to be safe to do so. Everyone is keen to see it happen again though, and it just gives us more time to make the 2021 festival even better!

Phew.... Another Halloween on the Scary Shuttle bites the dust! Thanks to everyone who came to join in the fun. The scary stuff has now been packed safely away for next year, although the bats took some settling down. It’s the end of October so that’s our operating season over for this year. However, the Shuttle will be out and about tomorrow to support the Wedding Fayre at Standedge Visitor Centre.

It was great to see so many people on our boat this year. We’ve broken our record for numbers on board, and we’ve been really pleased to be part of so many happy couples weddings too. We can’t do it without our fantastic Shuttle Crew - all volunteers, and all committed to making sure we run the boat on as many days of the year that we can. Time to put our Canal boots up for a few months, but we’re already making plans for next year.

See you in 2020!

Getting here
By boat - there’s moorings at both the Marsden end at the Visitor Centre Lock 42 and the Diggle end. Check our boating through Standedge page for details on how to book your passage through the tunnel

By car - SATNAV HD7 6DH takes you to the free parking at Marsden Station (HD7 6DH), from there take the 15 minute pushchair friendly walk along the towpath to join us. Disabled parking at our visitor centre. You can also park at the station and hop on the Marsden shuttle boat from the station lock 42 which is free and will take you to the centre.

By train - Marsden Station is a 15 minute walk along the beautifully restored Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath

By bus - bus route 184 Oldham - Huddersfield drops off and picks up on the A62 in Marsden village then follow the canal towpath

By water taxi - the Huddersfield Canal Society’s volunteers run a 12 seater water taxi service between Marsden Railway Station and Standedge at weekends and bank holidays. Please check their website for details

By coach - coach drop off is only at Marsden Station. But there's more parking at lock 42 near the train station. (Sorry, our tunnel’s historic nature means we’re not allowed coaches on site but at least you get to enjoy the towpath walk.)

Come and meet us on the 21st july. But What have Huddersfield canal society Ever done for us? I hear you say?

Huddersfield Canal Society was formed in 1974 with the ambitious aim of restoring the then derelict Huddersfield Narrow Canal and improving the Broad Canal.

After 27 years of campaigning and restoration, led by Canal Society volunteers, the Narrow Canal was re-opened in May 2001 and gained Royal approval with an official ceremony by HRH Prince of Wales in the September that year.

Funding for removal of the final set of major blockages, amounting to £30 million, was received from the Millennium Lottery Fund and English Partnerships, with contributions from the Society, Tameside, Oldham and Kirklees Councils and the former British Waterways.

The Society’s members and volunteers help protect and promote the canals so the years of hard work and investment can continued to be enjoyed by all. find out more here http://www2.huddersfieldcanal.com/
