The Sexual Offences Act legalised homosexuality for men over 21 in England & Wales back in 1967. Fifty years later, Mark Gatiss marked the anniversary by curating Queers, a series of monologues dramatising the previous century of queer British experience. We performed all eight monologues in April 2019, with scenes ranging from WWI's love that dare not speak its name to modern gay marriage, via secret Polari, HIV/AIDS and political protest.

The original West End production of Dark Sublime featured Star Trek legend Marina Sirtis – big shoes for our own performance veteran Lynne to fill, but she's always up for a challenge. She's playing Marianne, the fading star of a 70s sci-fi TV show, whose quiet retirement is shattered by the arrival of superfan Oli.

Dark Sublime is on at the Lawrence Batley Theatre as part of LGBTQ+ History Month next week, 2-5 February.

Huddersfield Thespians at the LBT

Running from 1979 to 1981, British sci-fi show Dark Sublime tried valiantly to outdo big budget rivals like Doctor Who and Star Trek, using time travel, cursed gemstones and parallel dimensions. Despite its kitsch and dated reputation, the series and its message that life can always get better resonates with a new generation of fans.

Michael Dennis's play was first performed in 2019 with Marina Sirtis playing Marianne, the fading star of 'Dark Sublime' whose quiet retirement is shattered by the sudden arrival of young superfan Oli. What follows is a celebration of escapism and sci-fi's power to inspire, with an emotional spectrum covering romantic regrets, struggles with sexuality and fragile self-esteem, and a battle between nostalgia and letting go of the past.

The play is a light-hearted foray into the world of fandoms, gleefully unpacking the experience of attraction and rejection while reminding us that meeting our idols isn't always everything it's cracked up to be.

Dark Sublime is on at the Lawrence Batley Theatre as part of LGBTQ+ History Month, 2-5 February. £5 tickets are available for under-30s on the Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

Huddersfield Thespians at the LBT

This light-hearted foray into the world of fandoms and the experience of attraction and rejection – and the foolishness of meeting your idols! – will be staged at the Lawrence Batley Theatre as part of the LGBTQ+ History Month 2022.

The play follows superfan Oli, as he tries to rekindle interest in a 35-year-old scifi TV series whose message that life can always get better resonates with young fans but not with the older, jaded cast members. Marianne, the show's villain, would much rather move on with her life, but her unexpected meetings with Oli force them both to reconsider their opinions, as they range across an emotional spectrum including romantic regrets, struggles with sexuality and fragile self-esteem, and a battle between nostalgia and letting go of the past.

And can Marianne's longtime friend, Kate, persuade her to be happy for Kate and her new relationship with Suzanne?

'Dark Sublime' is a celebration of escapism and sci-fi TV, with genuinely human relationships at the heart of it all. Along with the quest for the 'shadow ruby', audiences will enjoy the romantic obsessions, threatened friendships and wildly comic dialogue of Marianne and Oli's real-world lives.

Catch the play at the Lawrence Batley Theatre as part of LGBTQ+ History Month, 2-5 February. £5 tickets are available for under-30s on the Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

Hi - a bit of a random request please, but is there a historical archive anywhere of people of Huddesrfield in the performing arts? A line of my family (the Brownhills) came from around the area and I have a hand written song/music book featuring a JT Brownhill who was a a female impersonator. The images look like early 1900s, but I can't track down any information on him and how he links to the family. Any help gratefully received. Thanks
