Our latest exhibitions are open!! Visit the Bath House Gallery, Sovereign Design House, to see the Cultures of Film Group Exhibition and the Culture Lab Film Commissions and grab a coffee and cake from the Toast House Cafe while you’re there 👏🏻

The Cultures of Film Group exhibition brings together a selection of projects from academic staff within the School of Arts and Humanities, with a focus on film as a means of research, documentation and exploration. Across the exhibition, film captures the rhythm of making, records live encounters with artworks, explores our relationship with technology and shows the world from a childlike point of view.

The Culture Lab Film Commissions celebrates four participatory filmmaking commissions developed with communities in Marsden, Cleckheaton and Dewsbury as part of Cultures of Film. Through workshops, creative activities and ongoing engagement, the filmmakers explored the cultural life of each place with the people who know it best. Rather than illustrating predetermined narratives, the films grew from these encounters, shaped by the priorities, interests and creative contributions of those involved.

📽️Cultures of Film Group Exhibition, opening Thursday 9 September at the Bath House Gallery, Sovereign Design House! 📽️

This exhibition brings together a selection of projects from academic staff within the School of Arts and Humanities, with a focus on film as a means of research, documentation and exploration. Across the exhibition, film captures the rhythm of making, records live encounters with artworks, explores our relationship with technology and shows the world from a childlike point of view.

Together, the projects featured demonstrate the diverse ways film can function as a practice of enquiry and discovery. They invite us to consider not only what films show, but how they produce knowledge: through attention, encounter, duration and the possibilities of seeing differently.

⏰ Monday - Thursday, 10am - 3pm, Fridays, 10am - 2:30pm

✨(Re)Use, opening Tuesday 1 September in the Atrium of the Barbara Hepworth Building! ✨

This exhibition gathers together recent projects from the Sustainable Living Research Centre (Nic Clear, Yun Gao and Hemen Galal) that look at how we can reuse, adapt and re-imagine materials and ideas in the built environment through both actual and speculative projects.

Centred around projects that are linked by their adaptation of the humble wooden pallet, one uses it as a primary building material in a community gardens project that brought together the SLRC, Natural Kirklees, local growing groups and Mirfield based manufacturers Actiform, to build a shelter at the Peace Pit Lane community garden in Deighton. The second project is the WorldStack a project that uses pallets as a conceptual model for adaptable future housing in the face of mass climate migration.

Two other projects in the exhibition are works in progress that also take a speculative position to the (Re)Use agenda: the first imagines the redevelopment of Dewsbury Post Office by a group of amateur enthusiasts long after the Post Office itself has been privatised and is linked to a AHRC India -UK Heritage research project. The second is inspired by the landscape of the Chinese classical gardens, the green wall panel demonstrates the interaction between Nature and Culture, and the pivotal role of built environment as a mediating realm where human actions and natural rhythms coalesce.

🗓️ Tuesday 1st September to Friday 2nd October
⏰Monday to Friday, 10.00am to 5.00pm

📍 Dewsbury Culture Lab returns!

Whether you joined us at the first Culture Lab or are coming along for the very first time, we’d love to welcome you.
This next session is in two parts – join us for one or both:

🎨 Dewsbury Culture Lab – helping shape the future of culture in Dewsbury through creative conversation, shared ideas and local action.

🤝 Artist & Creative Networking – an opportunity to meet other artists, makers, creatives and cultural organisations, build connections and explore future collaborations.
Don’t worry if you missed the first Lab – we’ll start with a short recap before moving into the next stage of the conversation.

We’re also excited to be hosted by Dewsbury Arcade CIC in their temporary pop-up space while the historic Arcade undergoes regeneration. We’ll be sharing more about those exciting plans on the day too.

Everyone is welcome – whether you’re an artist, community organiser, volunteer, business owner, cultural organisation or simply someone who cares about Dewsbury
