10th July 2026

We invited a piano teacher who lives in Italy to join us, and she played the ukulele for us. Together, we came up with Japanese lyrics for the song.

We decorated the portable shrine (mikoshi) and walked around carrying it while shouting “Wasshoi!” together.

Finally, we enjoyed a watermelon-splitting activity and ate the delicious watermelon. This was our final activity of the term!

Have a wonderful summer holiday, everyone. We look forward to seeing you again in September!!

03.07.2026 - Today’s theme was Tanabata (Japanese Star Festival).

For that day (7th July), Japanese hangs millions of wishes and paper ornaments on bamboo — for two lovers who are only allowed to meet once a year.

It's called Tanabata, the Star Festival, and Japan has kept this date for over 1,270 years!

The legend: Orihime, a weaver princess, and Hikoboshi, a cowherd, fell so deeply in love that they abandoned their work.

Her father, the Sky King, separated them on opposite banks of the Milky Way as punishment.

However, he couldn't bear his daughter's tears — so he allowed one reunion a year, on the 7th night of the 7th month.

The two lovers are real stars: Vega and Altair, which genuinely sit on opposite sides of the Milky Way in that night’s sky.

So every July 7th, in a lots of public spaces such as stations and libraries, there are filled with bamboo branches, and people hang paper strips called tanzaku carrying their wishes.

The children started with their favourite game Fruit Basket with Tanabata theme. Then followed by writing their own wishes on tanzaku - the most popular wish was ‘having a pet!’, from a dog to an axolotl. The children also enjoyed designing Orihime and Hikoboshi’s clothes. We saw some very imaginative and colourful ideas✨

Also the children who participated JaLaChamp (Japanese Language Championship for Young Lerners UK 2026) in February received their certificates. It was a video competition which theme was ‘my (our) favourite sandwiches’ and ours went through as one of the finalists! The ceremony was taken place last month in London.

The day finished with the graduation. Sadly, two children are leaving to go to secondary school in September😢 It was a sad moment as they’ve been attending since reception year! Hopefully we’ll see them sometimes as volunteers😊

☀️26th June 2026☀️

Theme: Making Kakigori (Japanese Shaved Ice) & Bunting Decorations

Today’s theme was perfect for the heatwave that hit Brighton!☀️🥵☀️

We started the session with introductions:
Name + your favourite cold food.

Most of the children chose ice cream 🍨, but my answer was somen noodles (haha!).

Then it was time for our kakigori-making activity. 🍧

Kakigori is one of Japan’s favourite summer treats and a true symbol of the Japanese summer.

The syrups we used had arrived all the way from Japan and came in five flavours:
Hawaiian Blue, Mango, Cola, Strawberry, and Muscat Grape.

The children were free to pour on whichever syrups they liked and create their own unique combinations.

Their personalities really shone through!

* Blue-themed kakigori
* Orange-themed kakigori
* Rainbow-coloured kakigori 🌈

When I asked whether they had chosen their flavours based on taste or colour, every single child answered, “Colour!”

That was quite a surprise! Perhaps when they choose treats in shops, colour plays a bigger role than we realise.

After enjoying our refreshing creations, we moved on to making bunting decorations for our Origami Workshop on 5th July.

Each child designed and decorated their own letter, one by one, helping to create a beautiful banner for the event ⭐

There’s no doubt that our workshop is going to look absolutely wonderful! ❣️

🌸 Ohisama Friday Japanese Club — 19th June ☀️

We had a wonderful afternoon at our children's Japanese club, and we were so happy to welcome lots of new members to the group!

This week's theme was Father's Day & the Summer Solstice ☀️

📅 Date practice — We warmed up by learning to say the day, date and day of the week in Japanese, looking at today, tomorrow and the day after. We also asked the big questions: when is Father's Day, and when is the summer solstice? ☀️

🗣️ "Self-introduction" — Each child shared their name and their favourite food in Japanese.

🚶 Aisatsu (greetings) game — The children walked around the room, and each time they met a friend they did a fun action together. We played it in rounds: making eye contact 👀 → saying "Hajimemash*te" (nice to meet you) → introducing themselves → and finishing with a jump! 🦘

💌 Father's Day cards — Everyone made a special handmade card to take home.

This session was also a special Open Day for families whose little ones will be starting Reception next year — if that's you, we'd love to welcome you to Ohisama! ☀️

12th June 2026

“Kaekko (Swapping & Shopping) “

The children learned about the shopping activity and how they could earn points through the “Challenge” activities.

They played a name game in which one child called out another child’s name and clapped twice. When a child heard their name, they then called out the name of the next person.

The children were divided into three groups and sang “The Frog Song” in a round.

Next, they worked with a partner to appraise the items they had brought and assigned point values to them.

The shopping activity then began. Everyone looked for items they liked and purchased them using the points they had earned.

After they finished shopping, some also had the opportunity to try being shopkeepers and selling items to their friends.

Everyone seemed excited about the variety of items they were able to buy and thoroughly enjoyed the activity.
