MARION BRANDIS, ENCOUNTERS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE COMMENTING ON NOEMI MARQUEZ

None of Noemi's pieces are completely smooth. They are embellished with arrows, spirals and crosses. Although these may remind us of indigenous symbols, to Noemi they are just there to dress the work, and to give a signature. "My intention is to give personality to each one, to be distinguished from the other. However, overall people can recognise that they come from the same hands."

For me, her work has a universal quality. You cannot easily place it within a cultural context. You cannot tell that she is a South American artist without prior knowledge. Her symbolic decoration can mean different things in different cultures. The cross for example stands for a kiss in Anglo-American culture, and some see the circle as a hug at the end of a letter, but as a German a cross would mean ‘crossing something out’. The viewer has to engage with the work on their own terms to find individual meaning.

Noemi’s sculptures have a sense of mystery. They remind me of pre-Columbian art for which few written records exist. Her sculptures move me in a similar way to the pre-historic stone spheres in Costa Rica, which seem to emerge from the rainforest. Her work emerges from the earth too, quite literally, as they are made of clay. We cannot tell their exact function, we do not fully understand them, but they move us in a personal way.

In her own words:
"People have told me they hugged one of my works and wept, because the sensitivity of each is very different.”

Hi, I am Marion Brandis and am taking over the Encounterartspace feed to introduce my favourite artist from Miladys’s stable. She is called Noemi Marquez, and she is a sculptor from Venezuela. We have never met, I have never spoken with her in person and our work is very different. But – what we share is that we are both ceramists, working on a large scale. Here she is in her own words:

"That wonderful stuff in my hands turned sculpture that has been rising as columns, as tall menhirs looking like birds of the sky looking like faith in search of man, as the stones in search of the river, as I hope awakening in which contemplates such as deep feelings emanating from the earth."

Encounters first Instagram artist -in-residence. The 7th week. Don’t miss it!
Always is a joy to talk about the ceramist artist Marion Brandis . Today, with pleasure, I announce her as our IG Resident guest for the next seven days!
As many of you know Marion is an accomplished ceramist and landscape designer, whose evolving works steadily have become Land Marks in many cities of Great Britain.
Proudly, I would like to highlight Marion Brandis’ latest public commission for the Whitegold project. It is the St. Austell Sphere, made with china clay from the St. Austell region, representing the town’s connections to china clay, the landscape and to local people. It will be her largest architectural sphere. Congratulations Marion!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Marion and Encounters have had an interesting artistic and challenging journey together since 2016 - the year that she launched the large and beautifully made ‘Kemp Town’ sphere. In 2017 there was an interesting ‘Brighton Large Seagulls’ Installation. Followed by an even larger sculpture in 2018 ‘Embrace your World’ - a magnificent work for Encounters winning year. In 2020 the artist registered the global pandemic time with a mixed-feeling work, ‘Life in the Time of Corona’ - both interesting and creatively achieved!
At Encounters, we celebrate every step of Marion’s success. She is not only a fine ceramist but also a delightful artist to work with. Creativity, open mind and venturesome are just some of her attributes.

Undoubtedly, Marion is an asset for Brighton and Hove City and for Encounters. Proudly we present her contribution national and internationally.
I Can’t wait to see our IG Resident Artist: Marion Brandis. Welcome!

Lise’s cochayuyo complex forms evolve over time. Having been discharged from the protective depths of the ocean, they slowly acknowledge the exterior forces above its surface. These intricate sculptures of folded algae, each conserving and defending an anonymous and unpublished secret, ever so gradually deteriorate, suggesting they might one day reveal their obscured and mute interiors.
They retain their mysterious and silent beauty, surrendering their strong muscular leathery domination to become something more fragile and delicate, but nevertheless protecting the unknown within.
In the absence of a perspex shell to shield them , their deterioration is so gradual as to be undiscernible, but nevertheless their confidence is assured. Even with decay and destruction, the ambiguity of these unexposed entombed obscurities will almost certainly remai

Welcome to share Elizabeth Cemborain’s seven days of her residence, her choice of artist and a revelation of why the choice was made. Or anything else that Elizabeth want to surprise us with....
Before our new IG Resident takes over Encounters channel I am going to share few highlights about Elizabeth Cemborain.
Elizabeth’s iconic enlarged frames, that were extracted from videos, are
depicted in her iconic ‘Central Park’ series. This was the work that Elizabeth brought to show Encounter’s Brighton Festival audience. Her work is still resonating, not only in our visitors’ memories but also with many other Encounters artists.
Elizabeth joined Encounters in 2017. Such a wonderful time it was to have Elizabeth and her family with us during the Festival Time and in our Encounters Agora.
Since that time, recalled as a Special Encounters, Elizabeth became a member of Encounters’ family. She and her works are in Encounters heart!
Two sentences to describe Elizabeth and her work at glance:
1. Elizabeth’s work Virtual or in situ is always present - her digital creative approach conveys that possibility.
2. Readiness and willingness are great Elizabeth’s qualities, shown as she joins in many of our artistic ventures.

I am thrilled to say: I can’t wait to see Elizabeth’s deep dive in her Residence Journey. Welcome!

Welcome to share Carlos García García seven days of his residence. His choice of artist and a revelation of why the choice was made.
Let me to introduce Carlos before his first take.
He first exhibited at Encounters in 2017. It was a curated show about Technology & Nature. What a year!😊
Top Rouge Number 2, 2016 and Top Rouge Number 4, 2016 - both were part of its collection displayed that year.
García’s works portray urban scenes as a palimpsest, as he captures echoes of the past that have been partly erased to make room for the next iteration of a city’s evolution.
Since that time, Carlos became a member of Encounters’ family. Joining in many others Encounters and his work is always represented in Encounters Arty-Shop.
I can’t wait to see Carlos navigating this channel. Welcome!!
