MARION BRANDIS, ENCOUNTERS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE COMMENTING ON NOEMI MARQUEZ
None of Noemi's pieces are completely smooth. They are embellished with arrows, spirals and crosses. Although these may remind us of indigenous symbols, to Noemi they are just there to dress the work, and to give a signature. "My intention is to give personality to each one, to be distinguished from the other. However, overall people can recognise that they come from the same hands."
For me, her work has a universal quality. You cannot easily place it within a cultural context. You cannot tell that she is a South American artist without prior knowledge. Her symbolic decoration can mean different things in different cultures. The cross for example stands for a kiss in Anglo-American culture, and some see the circle as a hug at the end of a letter, but as a German a cross would mean ‘crossing something out’. The viewer has to engage with the work on their own terms to find individual meaning.
