We would like you all to give an extremely warm welcome to our new Hoofstock Keeper Joe 🤝

Joe joined the team 2 weeks ago & it's already like he's been here forever! He's fit right in with the team & just gets on with it! We are so lucky to have you on the team Joe.

Here's what Joe wrote:

Hi everyone! I’m Joe, one of the new hoofstock keepers at Wolds Wildlife Park.

I’ve always had a passion for wildlife and conservation, and I’m incredibly excited to have joined the team at Wolds Wildlife Park. I have just finished my degree in Applied Zoology at Harper Adams University, and have spent the past few years working with a range of species before gaining a deep appreciation for hoofstock.

One of my favourite parts of the job is getting to know each animals individual personality, and seeing the trust and relationships that develop over time. No two days are ever the same in this role. Whether it’s food preparation, creating enrichment, or spending time observing the animals, there’s always something new to learn.

My favourite animals to work with so far will have to be Pear and Pumpkin the tapirs, but Hercules the camel has definitely earnt a spot in my heart, he’s a big softie!

Our Bearded Saki Monkeys are usually very suspicious & scared of anything new in their enclosure, including enrichment!

However, they must have put their brave pants on 🩲 here you can see them enjoying getting their food out of the toys.

No music added so that you can hear little Pandoras constant calls in the background 📣

And of course we couldn't leave the Macaques out!

One of our Macaques is clearly more experienced in the cardboard box game than the others 🤣

Why make a hole to try & reach the food inside when you can just get in box yourself? 🤷‍♀️

It wasn't just the capuchins that enjoyed some enrichment - Gus & Bandiro, our male squirrel monkeys also received some tasty treats to unwrap 🎁🐒🐒

Our capuchins also got to enjoy some cardboard box enrichment. Their normal food, or special treats, are placed in the box & they have to find a way to access the food.

Enrichment is essential for monkeys to support their psychological and physical well-being. Because they are highly intelligent and naturally active, enrichment prevents boredom, reduces stress, and stops the development of abnormal behaviors by stimulating natural, species-typical actions like foraging, climbing, and problem-solving.
