WHO IS SHE?
Rebecca Clarke

🎻 Viola Virtuoso!
Clarke was an internationally acclaimed violist and one of the pioneering female professional orchestral musicians in London

👩‍🎓 She began her studies in composition at the Royal Academy of Music and later continued at the Royal College of Music under the guidance of Charles Villiers Stanford. Unfortunately, she had to leave her studies after a disagreement with her father, who withdrew his financial support.

🎶 She continued to support herself financially through her viola playing and eventually went on to compose several instrumental pieces, songs, and choral works.

WHO IS SHE?
Clara Schumann

🎹 Clara was a remarkable pianist, celebrated as one of the most gifted and impactful performers of her era. She had a distinguished 61-year career as a performer and also served as a teacher at Dr. Hoch's Konservatorium in Frankfurt.

🫶 She was, of course, married to Robert Schumann. She premiered several of his works for piano and also edited his published works.

"I once believed that I possessed creative talent, but I have given up this idea; a woman must not desire to compose – there has never yet been one able to do it. Should I expect to be the one?"

🎶 Despite her doubts, Clara wrote and published several wonderful works, including her Drei gemischte Chöre, which we’ll be performing on 30th May.

Who is she?
Chiara Margarita Cozzolani

Cozzolani was a sister at the “musically famous” convent of Santa Radegonda, Milan. Here the sisters performed music on feast days, separated from the public and priests by a high wall through the church. There are stories of crowds filling the exterior church to hear the nuns singing Cozzolani’s beautiful music!

🤔 Who is Hildegard von Bingen? 🤔

🤓 Not just a one trick nun! Hildegard specialised in, Philosophy, Theology, Medicine, Composition, Poetry and Art.

🎼 There are more surviving chants by Hildegard than by any composer of the Middle Ages, and she was one of only few composers to have written both the words and music.

📝 Although today we would consider Hildegard a key figure in Medieval Church music, she often referred to herself as an unlearned woman, a member of the weaker s*x. For some time, this prevented her from producing her works.
