Three in a Bard

Three in a Bard Three in a Bard – a new play written by John Palmer Just one of 20 plays chosen across the South West, and 260 nationwide. Indeed, as never written before.

Three in a Bard – a new play written by John Palmer, with more than a nod to The Swan of Avon, and based on nineteen characters individually created by the cast, has been selected to take part in the 2011/2012 Open Stages initiative run by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Next June, as part of the run-up to the Olympics, and the cultural celebrations, Three in a Bard will take part in the regional

finals at the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton, and – if selected – go on to the final staging in Stratford that July. And along the way, the cast, producer and backstage crew are being trained and mentored by professionals, including one of the Nuffield Theatre directors. So Holt is going to be treated to a WORLD PREMIERE in November! From Thursday 17th to Saturday November 19th you’ll have the chance to enjoy Shakespeare – as never seen before. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry – and you’ll wonder at the play’s working title, SWONK DOG. Because that’s what John has been saying when asked what his new play is about. Backwards….....

The Open Stages people have announced that the choice of production to represent the South West region in Stratford will not be made until May. This timescale makes our continued participation unsustainable. In the absence of any support for, or feedback on, Three in a Bard and with nothing concrete to go on, it has proved impossible to hold the cast of 19 together any longer. Therefore, with the greatest reluctance, Three in a Bard has withdrawn from from the Open Stages project.

A big "thank you" to our many supporters - it's been some journey!

Glowing review for Three in a Bard from NODA - the National Operatic and Drama Association...

"What a gem of a production this was!

“The clever structure and style of the production was a joy because it was able to deliver comedy so evidently in Shakespearean style and plot, but in a thoroughly up-to-date way. It successfully included key aspects of today's technology (such as the iPhone, Skype and Facebook) to this effect. And it did all this whilst still be very funny too – it was not afraid to go for humour from the intellectual to slap-stick and plain b***y!

"This was such an ensemble piece that it would be wrong to single anyone out as everyone worked so well together for the production. All were completely into their characters and performed to a very high standard.

“The use of related and contemporary songs over the set changes covered them well, as did the amusing Mizbec International voicemail announcements. Sound effects were timed well and were realistic. Costumes... were well done and relevant. I would also comment on the excellent programme notes, which explained the production and proceedings in a witty and engaging way.

“Writer and Director John Palmer and the whole of Holt Dramatic Society should be very proud of what they have achieved with this production. Thank you for a wonderful evening's entertainment.“
