Loving the early stage of this painting — that back‑and‑forth of adding and wiping away thin oil paint until something starts to take shape. And this one’s the biggest canvas I’ve tackled in… honestly, decades. Too many to admit. Feeling good to stretch out again.

Keep swiping to see how big it is 😊

Delighted that The long way through the ordinary has been selected for the Jackson’s Art Prize 2026 Extended Longlist.
It’s been a strange week — a setback on one day, followed soon after by the joy of this news. A good reminder for me that when something difficult happens, the balance can shift again just as quickly.

Feeling very grateful. The creative journey is never a straight line, and moments like this feel especially heartening.

Continuing to play with symmetry in this new piece — aligning to my usual themes of journeys, cars, and the sense of commuting. Something about this palette feels like we’re moving into spring, and I’m really enjoying the fresh shift it brings. The marks are starting to do interesting things too. Still very early days, definitely a work in progress, but there’s a lot of potential opening up here.

Been spending time with this new painting — letting symmetry take the lead.
There’s something about the repeat, the return, the mirrored rhythm that feels a lot like commuting itself: the same path, the same motion, yet never quite the same day.
Exploring how those patterns settle into the body, how routine becomes its own quiet choreography.

More to come as this one unfolds.

If you’re in Leeds this weekend and fancy seeing some art why not pop into The Eye Room for some Still Light where I m showing some of my paintings alongside Lindsey Tyson.
I’d also recommend a visit to Leeds Art Gallery to see ‘Don’t Let’s Ask for the Moon...’: Nocturnes and Atkinson Grimshaw

M1 pink
This little painting has been on and off the easel a few times now. At the point now where I’m going to leave it be for a while. Do love how the pink pops ❤️

Found out yesterday that I’ve recently won a MAFA Academician Award in the Voyages Exhibition by the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts at Manchester Cathedral.
Little bit late to be posting this as the Exhibition has sadly finished. I’m working on being quicker 😀

I gave in and I feel so much happier.
This painting started with a limited palette of lamp black and white oils and yes my intention was to stay with shades of greys but I reached the point when I just had to add some colour.

I started to introduce mixes of french ultra marine and burnt sienna. Hints of colour just add another dimension to this. Think I need to get pink out of my colouring box. 🤣

I meant to mention…

I’ve got a couple of paintings in Holmfirth Art Week starting this Sunday 6th July - 12th.

‘One hour 33 minutes’- which is quite a large oil on canvas work
Then the slight smaller ‘Into the sun’ - oil on panel.

Then I’m trying out the market place with quite a few smaller abstract paintings and a few smaller studies for some earlier works.
There’s something for everyone.😀

Looking forward to visiting this week 10-9pm Monday to Friday
