To celebrate our special year, we are partnering with North Herts Museum to bring you some highlights from its history.
The building opened on Monday, 18 March 1901, and has played host to parties and politics, weddings and funerals. Over 2026, we will show you the 125-year story of Hitchin’s ‘new’ Town Hall. If you have any pictures or memories that can help tell the story, leave a comment or email us. We would love to hear from you.
Here’s a photo of a Youth Music Festival, held in the Mountford Hall, 1929.
We think there are well over 700 people in this photo, packed into the hall from front to back. Every level is full, with hardly any space left at all. It is hard to imagine that many people in the room now, when fire regulations mean the maximum capacity is 250.
A really interesting snapshot of how busy the hall could be. How did they fit an audience in?
Keep an eye out on Hitchin Town Hall's social media for the next instalment.
