two weeks to go. Time to shift up a gear...

"What's it about?" is a question I have been presented with recently.

How to reply? immediately goes through my mind. How to summarise 10,000 words in a single sentence. How to explain the gothic/science fiction background that the works come from. How to capture the journey of two people people subjected to extraordinary terrors in 7 or 8 words.

It can't be done.

So, if you want to know "What's it about" - you'll have to go along and watch Light the Fuse, where a soldier recounts his journey through a hellish war; and Hollow Man, where the victim of inhuman experimentation shares his experiences...

Hollow Man:

They carried to the asylum at Lincoln in a heavy box-wagon; moving only at night. Armed guards on horseback rode before and after. But the guard at the driver’s side carried no gun. Instead he held in one hand a slow match, lit at all times, and in the other he held the fuse to a charge of gunpowder that would blow the entire wagon sky high.

Once within the asylum compound the wagons occupant was carefully moved within to a soundproof room, deep within the fortress like building.

At last the heavy wool cloths, placed over the unfortunates face to muffle his screaming, were removed.

Many would have been horrified by what was revealed. Many would have fled in fear.

But Arkwright had seen too many terrible things, and was very much in control of his fear.

Besides, as he contemplated the possible fate of the wretch in front of him, he felt more pity than fear. He also felt a considerable amount of curiosity.

Who was this hollow man in front of him? If he could articulate sounds other than screams; what story would he tell?

Light The Fuse:

The South Seas War draws to a close. The death throws of a bitter conflict that many will be glad to turn their back on and forget; an episode to be erased from history, remembered only as a horror story to frighten those fools who would play the game of war.

But for now the battle still rages. The Insurrectionists, the Ossie as they are called, are fighting to the last in a siege of colossal proportions. Not since the Holocaust of the 30 Years War has so much been sacrificed for a single town. Siege works and fortifications stretch out in lines as far as the eye can see, the air is thick with smoke and the noise of the guns never ceases. The ground is torn up, snipers bullets bring unseen death to the unwary and a hundred little battles are fought each day. Men killing and dying for a blood soaked patch of trench a few yards in length.

In the middle of it all, Arkwright, a soldier of the Volunteer Infantry Corps and a survivor of countless battles, prepares to play his part in the ongoing battle. As he goes about the grim business of total war, he tries to gather what is left of his shattered identity; before war robs him of the only thing he has left…
