For years the top of the hi-res streaming ladder has looked settled. Tidal and Qobuz gave listeners high-resolution stereo, and most people assumed that was as far as home streaming could realistically go.
A new service is about to test that assumption.
The founder behind it built his reputation on a physical disc format made for people who care about every layer of a recording, and he is now bringing that thinking to a live platform.
This platform can stream something the big services have never managed to send out without squeezing it down first. And, its goal is to make far greater use of capable home systems while also offering a version intended for ordinary headphones.
That puts the platform in a category of its own, though its launch will test how far audiophiles are willing to go for an experience they cannot currently get from other streaming services.
Accessing that advantage, however, involves more than selecting a premium plan and opening an app.
