Our final artist in our meet the artist series is Ellie Reid!

Ellie Reid brings a sculptural approach to her art practice which employs drawing, printmaking, sculpture and installation. Inspired by the history of Castle Hill House, its folly, and the surrounding Buckinghamshire woodlands, she has created two site-responsive sculptural works for the museum garden. Exploring the intersection of the man-made and the organic and the manicured and wild, these pieces will evolve over the course of the 12-month exhibition, shifting in character as the surrounding nature changes.

Next up in our meet the artist series is Caroline Thomson!

Caroline Thomson is an MA Fine Art graduate painter. For Truth or Folly she has drawn on the world of both European fairy tales and local folklore mythology to explore the rich artistic and literary history of woodlands and forests which act as a metaphor for retreat, transformation or the unknown. She has created a series of paintings that are suggestive of scenes from a story or myth, narratives that are half remembered and twisted in time. The paintings emerge from thin washes of oil paint combined with a rhythmic calligraphic line, allowing light and colour to create atmosphere.

Next up in our meet the artist series is Ellie Laycock!

Ellie Laycock’s practice examines power, economic systems and time. For Truth or Folly, she responds to High Wycombe’s historic chair-making industry, focusing on the skilled female home-based work that sustained families on low wages in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. An antique Windsor chair is re-caned in pink wool, referencing women cane-seat weavers whose precision was poorly paid. The wool connects to Laycock’s grandmother, a worsted mill worker in the industrial north. A lace-making sculpture forms the number eight, the age girls left school to work, with pencils replacing bobbins to represent the education they were forced to leave behind.

Next up in our meet the artist series is Jane Peacock!

Jane Peacock’s practice encompasses painting, drawing and printmaking, producing abstracted landscapes that engage with geological time, evolutionary history, myth and folklore. For Truth or Folly, she creates imagined scenes from the past, containing both real and fictional elements that reference the layered nature of storytelling.  These images consider how archaeological fact, local myth and collective memory become entangled in the context of Castle Hill House and the town of High Wycombe.

As we move in to May we thought we would introduce the artists that make up Fractured Land Collective. First up Lian Chan

Lian Chan’s practice explores landscapes of the past and future. Drawing on historical narratives, deep time, and future ecologies, her photographic art reimagines landscapes and their stories to suggest alternate truths and realities. For the Truth or Folly exhibition, she presents a fictional narrative based on the Peace Family, who once resided at Castle Hill House. Against the backdrop of this mysterious site, she combines archival material with her photographic works to conjure the past and future.

Thanks so much for visiting and for making this wonderful reel!

A Saxon grave, discovered mid wedding party. A mysterious mound nobody can quite explain. A kitchen that feels like a Victorian ghost story waiting to happen…👀

has always been a treasure trove of mystery and history - and this brand new exhibition is finally pulling back the veil.

Truth or Folly by is a year-long journey through Wycombe’s real histories and imagined myths.

Contemporary art - all rooted in stories from right here. Thought provoking and a little eerie.

It’s open now and free to visit - and honestly unlike anything else in town 🎨

Plus more to come with creative workshops and evolving artworks. Definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Hello! 👋

This is us! Fractured Land Collective, a group of five artists, .art last March stood outside in the beginning stages of planning Truth or Folly. This exhibition and events programme has been a year in the making and shortly before Christmas last year we were delighted to find out that we had been awarded a National Lottery Project Grant by alongside generous support from Opportunity Bucks.

Truth or Folly is an evolving exhibition and events programme that blends Wycombe’s real histories with imagined myths, inviting visitors to question what is truth and what is folly.

Truth or Folly Opens 17th March!

We will be sharing much more about the exhibition and amazing events (featuring the brilliant , and local legend amongst others) over the weeks ahead. We are also excited to be working with BA Fine Art students from on this project. We’re hugely grateful to be support shown by such wonderful folk at the Museum, Bucks Council, Bucks Culture and the wider Wycombe community, thanks to all.
