📢 Launching today the A&H Freelance Associate Network, a new model for collective, sustainable public work! 📢

The arts and heritage sector is changing — fast. Funding structures, institutional models, and ways of working now rarely provide the level of support needed to create ambitious collaborative work, and don't provide a space for retaining the knowledge and archiving work. Increasingly, it is freelance producers, curators, and cultural workers who hold the knowledge, relationships, and creative leadership that make meaningful projects possible, whilst the current reality is that we are all experiencing the most precarious working conditions.

At Arts&Heritage, this shift is lived rather than theoretical. Following the loss of NPO funding several years ago, A&H has become a fully freelance-staffed organisation. Rather than stepping back, we have used this moment to rethink how we work — and how we can better support the people, collaborators and partners who are shaping the future of arts and heritage engagement.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the A&H Freelance Associate Network: a new operating model designed to support freelancers to develop and deliver ambitious, values-led public engagement work with stability, collaboration, and shared infrastructure embedded.

As our festive offering this year, we are sharing our most recent work in partnership with Birmingham Cathedral, supporting the creation of their new contemporary commission, a Nativity Set by artist Melanie Tomlinson.

Melanie is a socially engaged, mixed-media practitioner from Birmingham. The work weaves together the traditional story of Christmas, the heritage of Birmingham, the stories of the cathedral community and the needs of the world during a difficult time for many.

In Birmingham's hyper-diverse city, they wanted all visitors to be able to see themselves represented in the commissioned artwork, and an artwork which reflects Birmingham and the West Midlands traditions of industry, craft and manufacture. The New Nativity celebrates the stories of the Cathedral Community, bearing witness to global events and bringing marginalised voices to its centre.

Launched in August 2023 ‘Networking international and transnational approaches to contemporary art in heritage practice’ was an 18-month research project which aimed to initiate a new international network bringing together UK and overseas academics, curators, artists, heritage organisations, and museum sites to exchange and explore transnational understandings of contemporary art in heritage practice.

Insights and outcomes from the pilot research are now available to read in a Project Report, which you can view and download online here: https://research.ncl.ac.uk/transnationalartinheritagenetwork/

The project was led by researchers at Newcastle University and was delivered in partnership with Arts&Heritage alongside National Trust, The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, and The Artist’s Studio Museum Network.

The project was funded by the UK Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) under its International Research Networking Scheme.

‘The Sh*tshow’ by artist Ellie Hoskins - - is an animated series of “episodes” in which a disgruntled fly on the wall comes to life and berates the girl it’s been observing. It’s the next film we are featuring on our Screening Room.

Originally commissioned by Signal Film and Media (Barrow-in-Furness) as part of their TIDAL series, the films’ over-arching narrative explores the character’s everyday domestic habits and her inability to go out into and enjoy nature.

Enjoy watching it and let us know what you think; visit our Screening Room via the link in our bio.
