To anyone who thinks they've left it a bit late to be creative.
I've had women in their sixties come to my class having never drawn since school. Within an hour they had a finished tile in their hands - something they made themselves, often for the first time in decades.
Creativity doesn't have an age limit. It just needs a starting point.
Zentangle doesn't reward talent. It rewards attention. And that only gets better with time.
You haven't left it too late. Comment FREE INTRO below and I'll send you my free beginner's class - or share this with someone who needs to hear it 🖊️

Nzeppel is one of my favourite Zentangle patterns and one I find myself coming back to again and again for filling negative space on a tile.
It starts with a crazy lined grid - lots of crosses and intersections - and then you restate those lines but curve the corners, creating shapes that look as though they've been squashed into the gaps between the intersecting lines. Think of pressing a piece of plasticine into a small space and you've got exactly the right idea.
The shading is where it really comes to life - shade the same side of each rounded shape consistently and the whole tile develops this lovely sense of roundness and depth that looks far more complex than it actually is to achieve.

Do you ever sit down to be creative and just stare at a blank tile, not knowing where to start?
Ten minutes pass. Maybe twenty. And you still haven't made that first mark.
I completely understand that feeling - and the Zentangle method really helps with it. It's an eight step method, and the very first step is simply placing a dot in each corner of your tile and joining them into a border. Those first marks are all it takes to get past the blank page and get started.
After that it's just one line at a time - whether you're following along with a tutorial or making up the pattern as you go.

Have you come across Vermal yet?
It's a Zentangle pattern with a really distinctive graphic quality - bold inky spaces, auras and shading that create this striking high-contrast effect on your tile. There's something almost linocut about the finished result, and it's one of those patterns that looks like it belongs in a graphic art collection as much as a Zentangle sketchbook.
The shading is what really makes it pop, and once you get the hang of where to place those inky spaces it comes together in a really satisfying way.

What's the difference between Zentangle and just doodling?
Doodling is automatic - your hand moves while your brain is somewhere else entirely.
Zentangle is intentional - you choose a pattern, you follow the steps, and you stay present with the mark you're making right now.
That shift is where the calm comes from. Not emptying your mind. Just giving it one small thing to focus on.
Doodling gives your hands something to do. Zentangle gives your hands something that actually gives back.

Nobody tells you that becoming a mum means losing yourself a little bit.
Not dramatically. Just quietly. The things that were yours slowly disappear.
And one day you realise you can't remember the last time you did something that wasn't for someone else.
That feeling is real. And it doesn't mean you've failed. It just means it's time to find your way back.
My free beginner's Zentangle class takes about an hour and it's entirely yours. No experience needed, just a pen and a piece of paper.

Project Pack 30 is here and I am so excited about this one - there is a brand new tile surface in this pack, which feels like a really special moment for the Zentangle world.

I am stocking these in the shop as a pre-order, which means you can grab yours now and I will get it dispatched to you in late July - plenty of time before the video lessons start dropping on 7th August. If you order anything else from the shop at the same time, I will send everything together with the pack at the end of July, so just bear that in mind if you need other bits sooner.

The link to pre-order is in my bio - are you joining in with Project Pack 30?

Have you come across Well Well Who yet?
It's a Zentangle HQ pattern and an adaptation of the tangle Well - built from curving lines and orbs, with the lines taking off and landing from each orb in a way that creates this gorgeous spinning pinwheel effect. It looks complex but it's much more approachable than it appears, and it works beautifully as a centrepiece tangle with loads of room to add your own embellishments once you have the basic structure down.

Something surprised me about teaching Zentangle in my membership. I genuinely didn't see it coming.
When I started I expected to turn up, turn on my camera, and teach patterns every other week. Simple as that.
What I didn't expect was the community that would build around it.
Everyone cheers each other on. They check in during every live session, share their tiles afterwards, and celebrate each other's work in a way that feels completely genuine.
The people drawn to Zentangle tend to be thoughtful, kind, and quietly looking for connection. I got so lucky with this group and I really don't take it for granted.
If the Ivy's Corner membership sounds like a community you'd like to be part of, comment MEMBER below and I'll send you all the information - or tag someone you think would love it 🖊️

Have you tried the Raddox pattern yet?
It's a Zentangle pattern built from patterned zig zags - simple to get started with but with so much potential once you begin adding embellishments. The texture it creates on a tile is really satisfying.
I'm drawing this on a small self-cut tile in this reel - you really don't need anything special to get going.
