The technical challenge this week is reverse sgraffito! The first class to try this today, gorgeous results, and the general consensus is this is a a very pleasing technique. Scraping coloured slip off leather hard clay is very satisfying!!

Inspired by the throwdown, I’m starting to add in a little ‘technical challenge’ to my classes. This is the Mishima technique. Slip inlaid onto embossed texture and then scraped back to reveal the pattern. Harder than it looks, as is often the case with pottery!…. the slip and the clay need to be at just the right stage for it to work well, and you need to scrape it hard but not too hard!

Love this beautiful bowl made by Terri last night! I’ve taken it out of its plaster mould to stop it drying too much, and will now wrap it so she can finish off next week. Gorgeous!
