Canwood Gallery

Canwood Gallery Contemporary art & sculpture gallery in rural Herefordshire. Free entry. Space to pause & reflect. The driver took him to the Tate and refused to take any fee.

Closed over Winter
In 1973 the gallery owner became seriously ill with leukemia, and was sent down to Bart’s hospital, in London as part of a medical trial. Such was his treatment that at one occasion his weight fell to 5 stone, which for a 30 year old man was quite ominous. When his treatment allowed he decided to venture out and took a black cab and asked where he could go to see something insp

irational. Upon walking into the Tate the first thing he saw and found great inspiration in was the controversial Karl Andre’s bricks. It was the first of many visits. Whether it was the escape and inspiration from the art or the treatment he was the only person in his batch of 12 to survive and to this day . It has always been his desire to give something back and to build a gallery in Herefordshire where people could experience great art for free. All profits will be donated to St Barts Medical research.

Music was one of Steve Brooks' great passions, inspiring some of the most distinctive works in his retrospective exhibition at Canwood Gallery open Thursday - Sunday 11am - 4pm until 19th July.

Through ambitious series based on Handel's Zadok the Priest and Elgar's The Kingdom, Steve transformed rhythm, harmony and emotion into striking visual compositions.

Discover how a Slade-trained artist translated some of Britain's greatest choral music into colour, movement and form. Read the full article on our news section www.canwoodgallery.org

For those who visited on Sunday, or are yet to visit, we wanted to share the story behind the mysterious white golf ball that has appeared directly in front of Metamorphoman.

This has been a three week long installation project directed entirely by Brian, the gallery dog.

Every morning before the gallery opens and Brian heads inside the golf ball is quietly removed. Every evening when the gallery closes, Brian carefully returns it to exactly the same spot. He then settles down and spends hours watching over his latest curatorial intervention.

John Williams () , we can only apologise for this unexpected addition to your remarkable sculpture. Whether Brian believes Metamorphoman is about to emerge from the ground and play a round of golf, or whether he has detected a subtle artistic meaning that has escaped the rest of us, remains unclear.

What is clear, is Brian has appointed himself Director of Artistic Placement and appears unwilling to discuss alternative approaches.

It seems the golf ball stays. Brian insists. 🐾⛳️🎨

A little glimpse behind the scenes at Canwood this week...

This June, keeping the paths mown has been something of a race against the weather. Isabella from .organised.office has been providing up to the minute weather intelligence, while Donald the lawnmower (a life changing recommendation from ) and I have been dashing out whenever the clouds part.

There is something rather magical about mowing through seas of ox-eye daisies with one eye on the sky and the other on the rain radar!

The effort is more than worth it. The wildflowers are simply spectacular this year, creating beautiful pathways through the sculpture park and some of the most breathtaking views we've seen in years.

June is a wonderful time to visit Canwood. The meadows are alive with wildflowers, the sculptures emerge through a sea of white blooms, and every turn offers a different view across the park.

Step inside NEST

As part of Becoming, visitors are invited to encounter NEST, a new immersive installation that gently dissolves the boundary between viewer and artwork.

Constructed from freshly gathered foliage, NEST offers a space to slow down, gather and dwell. Entering the installation becomes an act of participation, inviting reflection on universal themes of shelter, care, protection and belonging.

Whether you spend a moment or linger a while, NEST encourages a different pace, one of quiet observation and connection.

Come and experience it for yourself.
