This month is going to be all about oxidation glaze testing at both cone 6 and cone 10. Today I made a whole series of triaxial blends, exploring true mattes and developing some soft oatmeal, mushroom and earthy palettes that I can eventually layer with the white glazes I’ve been testing.
It’s a slow process, but I’ve also been putting my new glaze software through its paces and so far... It seems to be behaving really well. I can enter recipes, create blends between them, and test additions such as tin, chrome and other colorants, as well as variations on the base recipes.
I tell it how many tests I want to make and the volume of each one, and it gives me a full breakdown of exactly what needs to go into every test cup. Once I find something I like, I can then scale it up and generate a larger batch.
It also records everything I need for consistency, including water/added water, specific gravity and viscosity, and I can add photographs and notes for each test before saving everything for future reference. Individual tests and recipes can all be saved and exported, so it’s proving to be a really useful way of controlling, documenting and making sense of the glaze-testing process.
I’ll get a video edited soon to show it all in action, and I’m hoping to make the software available once I’m completely happy with it 🧐
