Such a fun day painting for Cambridge Artist of the year comp. What a stunning place! Hoping this is on again next year. Congratulations to the winners and short listed folks. Including .adamsart and .all_brook who’s paintings where wisked away out of 100 participants by the judges. They took so long to decide I’m guessing it was very close.. not easy when there was such a strong feild. Nice to bump into and meet .art and .

‘Dog rose and butter cups’ Some paintings are hard fought.. this is one. Started with great gusto.. after the first day on it life had other plans and I found myself dealing with a massive p**p storm in my other job. On top of this I had a cold which rapidly turned into I think a Covid thing. So I got quite poorly and had 0 energy for anything for a while.. after a few weeks I emerged like a phoenix from the ashes, all be it a coughing spluttering one.. determined to finish this painting. Now a wilted yellow swamp of goo on the still life table. A quick freshen up of models and I did it! Some times the win is not your best work. It’s just finishing something you started. Such a win.

‘Mays Muse’ A rose I inherited with the house and garden. Not sure what it is but I absolutely love its flouncy relaxed blooms in May. Not much of a repeat bloomer but magnificent and the first rose of the season to show up. Long may it last.

Not painted that long ago but with the garden already going a bit crispy nice to look back on the lush greens and apple blossom of last month. I hear we might have a drop of rain on the way.. that would be nice wouldn’t it.. better bring the washing in first though.

Continuing on with my celebration of all things flowery. Just because I’m really excited about this years flower show. I’m avidly watching every episode and wistfully wondering around my own garden in the now balmy evenings.. possibly imagining winning a gold for it. 😅
Anyway.. today I give you my absolute fave flower. the humble, beautiful, unbeatable spire of natural wonder. Beloved by artists, gardeners and bees alike.. the foxglove. Here’s some of my studies of her over the years.

If you’re off to Chelsea today.. enjoy.. serious fomo here. x

A simple, single peony flower to celebrate flower show today. I never tire of the poetry in every single bloom. One of the nice things about painting. Is you get to slow down and truly observe the form. The way things flow and work together. Nature truly is perfection.
